So long Mr. Putnam.

He was one high point of my time in Los Angeles.

I always loved his follow-up to callers foolish enough to express
support/love for illegal immigrants:

“Sir/Madam, your address please. So I can send all the illegals to
live with you!”

One day, late in the show I called just to ask him a question; the call-screener said he didn’t think there would be time to get me on the show, so I hung up.

Imagine my surprise when Putnam himself called me back to apologize for not getting to me.

We talked for about ten minutes; I never called him again - I was convinced that he was the genuine thing.
