Durbin voices doubt on extending drilling ban By Manu Raju Posted: 09/16/08 02:58 PM [ET] Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) conceded Tuesday that Democrats might not be able to extend the nearly three-decade-old ban on offshore drilling when Congress takes up spending legislation this month.
Under election-year pressures from Republicans over rising gas prices, Democrats have dropped their resistance to new offshore drilling on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. And Democratic leaders in both chambers seem willing to concede that they lack the support to add the drilling ban to a continuing resolution that will keep the government operating past Oct. 1. Since 1981, Congress has put the drilling ban on spending legislation to prohibit the Interior Department from using federal dollars on oil and gas lease sales along the coastal United States.
Democrats had considered pushing through the stopgap resolution with the offshore drilling ban and daring the GOP to block the measure, which would shut down the federal government just weeks before Election Day. But they now seem reluctant for such a high-profile fight before Nov. 4.

Gee...way to stick to your convictions, Dick.
Let the moratorium die! No new bills! Let’s open up all the coasts to drilling!!!!!
DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!!!
I have heard that even if they allow drilling, it will take up to three years just to get the permits approved. I have also heard that the drilling companies are saying that it is cheaper for them to build new drilling rigs than it is to get permits to repair those that are damaged in storms. If this is all true, it needs to be changed.
He's lying.
The 'Gang of 10' compromise will only increase Outer Continental Shelf drilling areas by 10%.
No Oil Shale drilling, ANWR still off the table.
I mean Oil Shale processing...or whatever it’s called.
Dirtbag can be counted on to do the politically expedient thing that keeps his worthless a$$ in power.
Yes. I totally agree. Just wait it out and let the current bill die this month. The dem's new bill is horrible.
NO! Durbin lying??????? GASP!
(Deanna, alive and well in France, has disowned this little pri-k.)
Well there you have it. The Democrats are sponsible for the high gas prices. The brain dead Illinois senator said so.
Well there you have it. The Democrats are responsible for the high gas prices. The brain dead Illinois senator said so.
Could the democrats really shut DOWN the government when the entire financial system is in turmoil?
At some point, people might end up voting the GREEN PARTY into power, if they get upset enough at the real political parties.
Sen. Durbin is running for re-election, this year, and I’ll vote for Chad Koppie. If you know any conservatives who live in Illinois, please ask them to read Koppie’s site, www.koppieforsenate.com. He’s pro-tax cuts, pro-spending cuts, pro-life, pro-gun rights, and anti-illegal alien.
I’ve bookmarked his site and will make a donation to his campaign. The fact that I don’t live in Illinois is immaterial!

Site is acting slowly and strangely.
This should be an easy one for the do-nothing Congress.
Let it die.
