Report: Rangel's Congress Parking Perk Breaks Law
NY Dem Has Parked 1972 Silver Mercedes-Benz In House Of Representatives Indoor Lot
Sep 18, 2008 2:16 pm US/Eastern

NEW YORK (CBS) - Rep. Charles Rangel is under fire again, this time for stashing an old car without license plates in a congressional parking garage.

**SNIP**

The Post said Rangel's registration on the vehicle, which is covered with a tarp and has no license plates, expired in 2004.

House rules require cars to display proper identification including plates and forbid use of the garage for storage.

Also, the House Web site says anyone with a reserved indoor space incurs taxable income currently calculated at $100 per month.

If the car has been in that space since its license plates expired four years ago, the imputed income would be nearly $5,000.

Rangel, who is chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, has been criticized for numerous lapses in his personal finances.

He is facing questions about unreported income on a vacation home in the Dominican Republic; his use of congressional stationery to raise money for an education center named after him; and his use of three rent-stabilized apartments in his home district of Harlem.

Rangel's press secretary, Emile Milne, said the congressman was in hearings all day and had no immediate comment.

People close to the New York Democrat said on Tuesday that giving up the powerful chairmanship was never under consideration. They spoke on condition of anonymity because Rangel has refused to discuss the matter publicly.

Rangel has come under fire for unreported income on a beach vacation home in the Dominican Republic, as well as other issues. He has been meeting privately the past two days with House Democratic leaders.

What's the difference between Charlie Rangel and a common criminal?

Nothing.

(The towing news came via a phone conversation from someone near NY who heard a report.)

Time to wake up and smell the coffee Chuck! You’ve worn out your welcome. It appears that your ‘RAT comrades think that maybe it’s time for you to go home and “spend more time with the family.” LOL!

The New York Post said the parking spaces are valued by the House as $290 a month, which is about the monthly cost of a private DC-area garage space. So that means his $5000 would actually be about $14,000, if you multiply 4 years (48 months) by $290.

No kidding! I hope they have that on video and post it on YouTube. Nothing like seeing “the common man’s” Beamer gettin’ dragged.

Here in Cleveland, we had security guards do the same thing at Hopkins and they even had the decency to have them drive their own cards out of the lot.

Yeah, and that parking space could’ve been put to good use by a good constitution-abiding, patriotic, productive member of congress like... ah, er, oh, hmmmmm.... Oops. Nevermind.

"It appears that your ‘RAT comrades think that maybe it’s time for you to go home and “spend more time with the family.”

You mean his wife of 42 years that he had filed for divorce from? He withdrew the divorce petition last week after the news of his tax scandal broke. He was actually blaming her for the problems with the rental income on his Dominican Villa. Now they're all lovey-dovey again.

What's the difference between Charlie Rangel and a common criminal?

A criminal is willing to act in a way that breaks the law.

Rangel does not believe the law applies to him.

I believe this parking was part of the slavery reparations package that 0h’B was putting together before the policy was untimely disclosed to the public. Of course since 0h’B nor his family were never American slaves his research group is desperately doing family research, not unlike the Clinton and Kerry camps were doing for their Irish heritage. Perhaps that nasty old grandma has some skeletons in her closet.

We don’t need reparations. Obama, the Democrats and the Black Congressional Caucus have made slaves of all of us. We’ll be paying off the excesses of the Freddie/Fannie/banking/housing failure for generations to come.

Not to be a nit picker, but I want someone to show me a parking garage near the capitol that only charges $3 per day. Not a chance! It never ceases to amaze me how politicians feather their nest at every opportunity. Where the hell is the IRS. I was audited each of the last two years for a hell of a lot less than Rangel's omissions.
