Palin unscripted
New York Times ^ | September 18, 2008 | Michael Cooper

Posted on 09/20/2008 6:01:01 PM PDT by reaganaut1

In his introduction, Mr. McCain said: “By the way: you may figure out from time to time Sarah and I don’t agree on every issue. What do you expect of two mavericks? To agree on everything?’’

And she bore him out on that a couple of times – once [on drilling in ANWR], and again when she suggested that they would be open to pushing for legislation on equality for women in the workforce, which sounded vaguely reminiscent of the equal pay for women bill that he opposed recently.

That came up when a woman who identified herself as a former supporter of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton asked Ms. Palin about their plans for “economic empowerment for women.’’ Ms. Palin answered by talking mostly about sports in school

“Well first, let me take a shot at that,’’ Ms. Palin said. “And I’ll tell you, I’m a product of Title IX in our schools, where equal education and equal opportunities in sports really helped propel me into, I guess into the position that I’m in today.’’

Mr. McCain interrupted: “Could I mention she was a point guard on a state championship basketball team?”

Ms. Palin continued: “Sports were very, very important to me growing up, just learning all about self discipline and about healthy competition and about what it takes to win, and even how to graciously lose sometimes, but how to win, that’s what it teaches you.’’

“Now I was a product of Title IX, where legislation allowed that equal opportunity,’’ she said. “Now if we have to still keep going down that road to create more legislation to get with it in the 21st century to make sure that women do have equality, especially in the workplace, then we’re there.”

I'll vote for McCain/Palin, but their comments above trouble me. Paying men and women differently for the same job is already illegal, as is denying someone a promotion because she is a woman. Obama wants to go beyond this with "comparable worth", where judges would decide how much jobs are worth, so that predominantly female occupations are not "shortchanged". See http://wizbangpolitics.com/2007/04/29/obama-backing-comparable-worth-now.php . Do McCain/Palin support this? If not, what would their "legislation on equality for women in the workforce" entail?

It is also disappointing that she expressed no reservations about the effect of Title IX on men's sports in college.

What does McCain mean by a "lack of [sex] equality in the area of education"? There are already laws against sex discrimination in education, and on measures such as earning high school diplomas and bachelors' degrees, women are surpassing men.

You know it says something that radical feminists endorse an all-male ticket out of political considerations because that other ticket with a woman on it isn't historic enough for them... even though she's the embodiment of everything feminism is supposed to be about.

I felt my approval meter regestering below zero when Palin came out with that one, the Title IX thing. Why are they even venturing into these issues? What about energy and the illegal alien problem? What about the democrat connection to the saving and loan debacle and subsequent economic slide? They need to remember they need to get a Republican majority in Congress, too. This is a perfect issue to use against the single-digit-approval-rating-for the Pelosi led House and the doofus in the Senate—I can never remember his name.

I don’t think McCain-Palin is interested in GOSPLAN.

The point of this article is to target the base.

The actual text of Title IX was to prevent negative impacts on men’s and boy’s athletic teams. It was a SCOTUS decision that mutated a good piece of legislation into an equal outcome monster. A real good argument for McCain Palin.

A former Hillary supporter asked about what they’d do for women.

Why must there be a separate plan for women? Does that not presuppose that women are in some way different from men?

To me, the preferable answer is to talk about how their plans will benefit all Americans or some such.

That being said, in the political context it’ll be fine. Which is troubling, of course.

I think that point was missed.

I agree with you—the only thing I’ve heard Palin say so far that I really dislike is when she goes on and on about Title IX and women and sports—I hate sports, and anyway, I have three boys who happen to like sports and I hate how Title IX has destroyed boys’ (men’s) sports. . .

Ask yourselves what is the point of this NY Slimes piece...

They can’t stand the fact that McCain’s choice of Palin has brought conservartives in from the cold and is reaching out to independents, women and Reagan Democrats at the same time.

The Left wants to drive a wedge into the heart of that coalition.

Yes, the Times is desperately trying to split the Republican base. Won’t work.

I’m a bit more concerned about Obama’s socialism and giving in to a nuclear Iran to worry about some wedge issues.

I wonder if Palin knows about the pernicious effects of Title IX on men's college sports. She needs to read Jessica Gavora's book, Tilting the Playing Field: Schools, Sports, Sex and Title IX.

However, it wasn't so much Title IX itself (the legislation) that caused the destruction of men's teams - it was its radical interpretation by unelected feminist appointees in the Clinton administration. IIRC Norma Cantu was one of the worst of Clinton's feminazi bureaucrats who really wanted to stick it to men's sports.

Also note Palin's "if" in the following quote...

“Now if we have to still keep going down that road to create more legislation to get with it in the 21st century to make sure that women do have equality, especially in the workplace, then we’re there.”

As the NYT notes, McCain voted against recent legislation that would've made it "easier" for women to sue employers for alleged "pay discrimination..."

...[McCain] saying that it could lead to too many lawsuits and too great a role for government in private enterprise

I hope Palin is on the same page as McCain on that point.

There weren't when Title IX was enacted. It's too bad that we needed such a law, but we did. And with every law comes unintended consequences. Title IX is about so much more than sports. People do not know that because there is WAY too much focus on Title IX and sports.

Sarah Palin and I are about the same age. And I can tell you that even with Title IX there was still discrimination against girls in public schools, and not only in sports. Very unfortunately, people had to be hauled into court to end it. I can't imagine what it must have been like before there was a specific law.

Umm. I do believe that man and woman are different. For instance, the plumbing. Then we can get into the other things. But, I'm not a doctor. You can Google the differences though. Give it a try.

palin is not an end. she is a stepping stone.

we have to endure mccain.

tolerate palin with her shades of title IX feminism nonsense,

so we can purge more rinos and get more conservatives elected.

There shouldn't need to be. We shouldn't have needed the 1964 Civil Rights Act either. But we did.

Yes, I'm aware. What I'm pointing out is that in the constitutional and political sense the question assumes that women are different from men. You know, what really matters as it pertains to this campaign.
