How Stupid Does Elections Canada Think We Are? (Marni Soupcoff Slams Elections Canada PC Alert)

Why does the Elections Canada Web site deem it necessary to offer a feature that breaks down each riding's candidates by gender? (They throw in a couple stick figures, one wearing a skirt, one wearing pants, just in case we're truly confused.) For one thing, even the weakest-minded of us should be able to figure out for ourselves whether a candidate has two X chromosomes or not. First, there's the candidate's name as a clue. And if that's not good enough ("Lee"s and "Leslie"s can be confusing), we can conduct further investigation ... like doing a two-second Google search.

Second, it's inappropriate, bordering on creepy, for Elections Canada to be segregating candidates based on gender, race, religion or any other criterion but political party. That's none of their business. And by singling out gender above and beyond other criteria, EC is implying that gender should be considered a more important qualification, which is hardly its place.

Is it necessary for Elections Canada to be politically correct? That is to break down MP candidates by gender, race, or religion? People are people!

Better that our politicians be broken down by sex, rather than by drugs!

Canada ping (if this database isn’t totally broken).

Best wishes, John

” (They throw in a couple stick figures, one wearing a skirt, one wearing pants, just in case we're truly confused.)”

As this helps. What's the symbol for pant suit? What about men in kilts? Also, they said “gender” not “sex” — that leaves a lot more possibilities open. What's the symbol for pre-op male-to-female transsexual? (On second thought, I don't want to know.)

Normally you can tell yourself, but then you have NDP candidates....

I would tend to call it sexist. Why should gender be part of the information needed to decide who to vote for? Are they going to put racial background and religion up there too next time?
