Austria is stunned by right's election gains

VIENNA, Austria - Austrians wrestled Monday to understand the reasons behind a resurgence of the far right, a day after the country's two anti-immigration parties soared to almost 30 percent of the vote.

Some experts suggested the results Sunday reflected a deep-seated discontent with the country's outgoing governing coalition rather than a sign that Austrians were becoming more extremist.

The governing coalition between the center-left Social Democrats and the conservative People's Party collapsed in July after a shaky 18-month alliance that hit snags over tax reforms and EU policy changes.

France, Italy, Austria - I wonder if the European left’s 50 year run is finally over. In time.

This headline is so silly. If they won a majority of the votes, how can the country be stunned?

It’s always “stunning” when conservatives win.

When liberals win it’s just business as usual.

And if they platforms want a crackdown on immigration I guess the conclusion is that a lot of Austrians think there is a problem with immigration.

They will be here, too, on Nov. 5.

Uh, allow me to rewrite this to reflect reality: AP wrestled Monday to understand the reasons behind a resurgence of the far right...> when every principled, moral person is a Far Leftist, like we Enlightened Ones here at AP.

The reporters are stunned.

I believe it. Whenever I read something in a newspaper along the lines of "some believe that..." without any direct quotations, I just substitute "this reporter believes that..."

“Austrians wrestled Monday to understand the reasons behind a resurgence of the far right, a day after the country’s two anti-immigration parties soared to almost 30 percent of the vote.”

A good place to begin to understand would be to ask themselves, aren’t those 30% Austrians too?

It sounds like the media is puzzled, not the actual Austrians.

Wow. The anti-immigrant parties got only 0.7% fewer votes than the Socialists.

This means that the People's Party is in control.

The Socialists will not form a coalition with the anti-immigrant parties.

So the PP has a choice of partners.

This means that conservatives won the election 55-45.

Perhaps this is a much needed line in the sand with the raving socialists, the PC crowd and the muzzies on one side and Austrians who actually LOVE Austria and want to preserve her as a nation on the other.

It’s long past time for US to draw one of those lines...

Actually only 70% of Austrians (at most) were “wrestling to understand” this, since the other 30% voted for the anti-immigration parties. I hope the 70% will get a clue quickly, and force the mainstream parties to clamp down on uncontrolled immigration that’s destroying their society, before it gets so bad that more than 50% of the voters are so fed up and terrified that they become willing to vote for truly extremist, racist, fascist political leaders.

rather than a sign that Austrians were becoming more extremist

These people are not extreme in any way.

Just like in the US, the new immigrants are coming in to get as much free stuff as possible and change everything because the only education they have received is the brain washing about how the better countries have exploited them and all they need to do is take them over and it will be a utopia. Never learning that their own governments and policies are what keep them third world.
