WASHINGTON - Sen. Jeff Sessions said he'll vote against the $700 billion bailout of the financial industry tonight because it was cobbled together too quickly without enough public input and leaves too many questions unanswered.
~snip~
Also Wednesday afternoon, the phones were ringing nonstop in the office of Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala. Both senators' offices say calls from constituents are overwhelmingly urging them to vote against the legislation.
Shelby, the top Republican on the Senate banking committee, did not participate in negotiations on the bailout and has called Paulson's proposal "fundamentally flawed." He will also vote "no" tonight.

We better hold our breath - I bet Obama votes no. If I were McCain I would skip the vote on the first call and wait for Obama’s vote to not get roped in to a bad vote.
TN Corker is going to vote YES
His staff told me today...
And Alexander is too I think..
I do so love my Senators. I made sure I let Sen Shelby and Sen Sessions know where I stood and that I urged them to torpedo this boondoggle. :-)
Now they need to walk across the capitol building and beat the snot of my congressman, the normally conservative intelligent Rep. Rogers for voting for this monstrosity.
Nelson said he'll vote NO, because it didn't have protections for people who are going through foreclosures (Too bad Billy)
Martinez will vote YES (bastard)
I have family in ‘Bama - they are so blessed to have Sessions and Shelby represent them!
Sen. Cornyn had better vote “no” as well. Or I will vote “no” on him when he stands for re-election in Nov.
I have given up on Sen. Hutchison.
Gosh, I’m listening to Bernie Sanders (Communist/VT) and I almost agree with half of what he’s saying.
Ditto.
The top Republican on the Banking Committee is against this?
Doesn’t this tell us everything we need to know?
I still cling to a delicate thread of hope that McCain is pulling a high-stakes game of political brinksmanship.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
My Rep, Robert Aderholt voted no and I am so proud of him and our two senators. Anyone who votes for a 400+page bill to (borrow and) spend 700 billiion should be forced out of office.
I am sick of these irresponsible people voting on things they have not read and do not understand.
Just read George Soros wants a bill, but wants them to take positions in the actual companies--i.e. become stockholders. If Soros wants it, it has to be bad for the country.
vaudine
All the crap they’re attaching is, IMHO, assuring its death.
Intentional?
If already e-mailed both NH Senators - NO!!!!
If men like Frank and Dodd are left unrebuked, and even celebrated as rescuers there is little hope for us, and much trouble to follow.
An honest plan would bring in the public to see this through, this plan shuts us out, and makes ninnies of us. I would love to see any real emergency plan handled by special panels of capable citizens selected at random from a pool of capable and honest citizens -- say the national pool of all judges above the most local level.
Of course. Many Freepers are siding with Michael Moore and Code Pinko also.
Anti Wall-Street populism is alive and well. Russia is cheering.
Yes, our AL senators are great, and for the most part, so is Rogers. However, he voted for it (I did not know that!) against my request!
There isn't a family out there who doesn't have to weekly or monthly make hard choices about how they spend their money. We, unfortunately, continue to make decisions on how we spend your children's money and your grandchildren's money on a parochial or political interest that benefits Members of Congress. That is what has to change.
If there is a lesson in what has happened to us in terms of the loss of confidence in the financial system in this country, all I have to say is Congress earned it. We created it. We expend 100 times more effort trying to create new programs and new ways of spending than we do managing the very Government you send us here to put under control.
I take the Constitution literally. It has a section in it called the enumerated powers. It is article I, section 8. It spells out exactly what the role of Congress is. If you look at how we got into this mess, every example of that goes back to the fact that Congress is violating what the Constitution says is our legitimate role, is doing something that is outside the legitimate role, and we rationalized it for the political benefits for either career politicians or party, one side of the aisle or the other. That is why Congress has a 9-percent approval rating, because we are more interested in us than we are the best interests of the country. And it shows.
Let us pray that the Senate Gop holds the line. McCain should not vote yes on this bill. There is an alternative.
Me too, Commish, but mine’s Everett.
How the heck did they district so screwed up that you got Rogers and I got the Everett from Dothan?
Sessions was on Mark Levin. The man is a conservative dream come true.
Yes, I’ve been doing just that.
