Reduced ability to name smells by hyperactive children has revealed for the first time a link between an impaired smell processing and the disorder.
The one-year-study of 88 children aged six to 16 - 44 with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - was led by the University of Melbourne and Murdoch Children's Research Institute. It shows how the children with ADHD had reduced ability to identify odours.
The study was published in September's Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
The study involved using scratch and sniff tests of common smells such as orange, chocolate and pizza. Felicity Karsz of University of Melbourne's School of Behavioural Sciences and co-author of the paper said 'a right nostril impairment appeared more evident among the children with ADHD'.
According to co-supervisor Warrick Brewer of ORYGEN Youth Health Research Centre - department of psychiatry, similar problems of smell identification have been observed in neuro-development disorders such as schizophrenia and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
'The sense of smell is increasingly becoming a useful way to detect a vulnerability to a neuropsychiatric disorder,' he said, according to a release of the Melbourne University.

Yes, I remember, but I also remenber that no one made a big deal of it. I was not hyper, I was “Calvin”. If you recall, from “Calvin and Hobbs”. If Barack was/is ADHD, what does it matter?

I haven’t heard of this one, can I guess that Hobbs was hyperactive or something? I grew up with a family who’s sons had been diagnosed as “Hyperactive”, the older one is within 2 years of Obama’s age.
Meds are a cop out. Maturity is what cures this. I know when I am "zoning" out and I make myself pay attention.
I hate that I am like this, but I REFUSE to let it rule me. I did get a BA. It can be done!

Obama’s performances without the teleprompter are poor, somebody has to ask if he has a problem, and I ain’t going to wait for the Media, they will hold any adverse or controversial information. I am not saying paying attention can’t be done, I am saying this seemingly healthy 47 man not releasing his medical records is a problem.
If Obama can not, at his age, cannot make himself pay attention then we don't want him. Not that I do anyway. But a man his age should not have anything to hide. No one our age has ADHD, if you get my drift.
Yes, that’s why I used a news article with “Hyperactive” in the title, to jar some memories from others that may help pin down what is the problem with Obama. I am 43, and there is something about Obama that reminds me of the friends that were diagnosed as Hyperactive, it is not an insult, I love my friends dearly and have a lot of respect for them.

I have a kid who is the poster child for ADHD, and he has a very acute sense of smell. He inherited it from our side of the family . . . I have it too. The gas company wound up using my nose to find a leak that their equipment couldn't detect -- I told them to get a beagle! (actually some gas cos. are using dogs to detect leaks, their smellers are of course far more sensitive than any human's). And I probably would have been diagnosed with ADHD if there had BEEN such a thing when I was coming along.
Add to this the fact that Obama frequently complains of tiredness or fatigue.
Right. We got paddled if we didn’t behave. No Ritalin, just made to eat what was put in front of us to eat and be glad to get it. The best I can remember, everyone behaved because they knew Miss Morgan would give them a knuckle sandwich and a bloody nose if they didn’t. (Yes, I know, I know, that’s too extreme, but it was the way it was.)
Another thing. . in several different schools of anywhere from 400 to 1,000, we didn’t have a single dietary problem with “peanut allergies” or “lactose intolerance” or that sort of thing - and no one died from or was even bothered by either of those things. Well, we did have a Muslim exchange student when I was a senior in high school, and there were dietary restrictions for her that the cafeteria workers had to cater to.
Many ADDers become leaders. They are able to multi-task to the extreme and tend to think out of the box. They often have poor one-on-one social skills but are able to motivate groups of people.
The ones who are successful tend to make up for their lack of focus by applying seeming unbounded energy and the ability to work very long hours, jumping from one task to another.
It's not unusual to find ADDers as entrepreneurs or as CEOs of companies. They surround themselves with people who take care of the details and the mundane activities.
I personally find these people exciting to work with. They have immense optimism and their energy can be contagious. As long as you are able to work in what can appear to be organized chaos, it can be extremely rewarding.
