AdWatch: Pro-Prop. 8 pitch starts with Newsom comments
Sacramento Bee ^ | 10/6/8 | Aurelio Rojas

Supporters of Proposition 8, which would ban same-sex marriage in California, are running their first television ad.

The commercial features San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom making a celebratory speech. The state Supreme Court had just invalidated a law overwhelmingly passed by voters in 2000 that declared "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." Following is a text of the ad and an analysis by Aurelio Rojas of The Bee's Capitol Bureau:

The ad

Newsom: This door's wide open now. It's going to happen whether you like it or not.

Narrator: Four judges ignored 4 million voters and imposed same-sex marriage on California. It's no longer about tolerance. Acceptance of gay marriage is now mandatory.

Richard Peterson (Pepperdine University law professor): That changes a lot of things – people sued over personal beliefs, churches could lose their tax exemptions, gay marriage taught in public schools.

Analysis

Newsom helped set off the legal fight over gay marriage four years ago when he decided San Francisco would issue same-sex marriage licenses. The 4,000 marriages that followed were nullified by the California Supreme Court pending legal review.

Too bad the “Yes on 8” campaign can’t seem to deliver yard signs.

I have been trying for some time to get mine.

Seems they are running a clueless campaign.

If they want to win with this proposition, the killer ad is simple.

They show Obama, Biden, Palin and McCain all saying marriage is between a man and a woman. Show outtakes from the debates when all say this. Then sum it up, “SOMETHING WE ALL CAN AGREE ON”.

This will get even some of the Obamabots to vote for the proposition. It would be a slam dunk ad but I don’t think these guys are capable of putting together a slam dunk ad.

Reminds me of Al Pacino in Devil’s Advocate.

Do you REALLY think Obama and Biden would participate in such an ad? I don’t. They are lying like “H” when they claim they are for marriage only between a man and a woman. They say so for the audience, but it’s just a tool for votes for them. When they would be confronted with making such an ad, they would not find the time to do so.

They don’t need to participate in the ad. They are public figures, they are on record saying the support marriage as a man and a woman.

All you have to do is show video out takes from the debates where they say it. It becomes a slam dunk ad.

And if B.O. and Biden get angry about the ad, well then that puts them on the defensive and questions whether they truly support man and woman or are just saying it.

It’s a double whammy which is why they should do that ad. Make it look like Dems and Reps support the same thing on the Presidential side. Force their hand.

I’ve sent this suggestion already to their folks on Friday.

I do love that commercial so. Gavin couldn’t have cut a better promo if they’d paid him. If Prop 8 passes or even comes close, they ought to send him a goodie basket or something.

There is a YouTube video of Biden & Palin's comments from a Yes on 8 YouTube account. Hopefully they'll splice and edit something together soon for an official advertisement.

Exactly. He has just the right note of in-your-face braggodosio and nastiness.

“Whether ya like it or not!”

Big mouth!
