CBS 5 Poll: Young Voters Lead Prop 8 Support Shift

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ― A new CBS 5 poll finds that California's Proposition 8 has picked up support in the wake of a television ad campaign that features footage of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaiming same-sex marriage is here to stay "whether you like it or not."

The poll conducted for CBS 5 by SurveyUSA indicates that support for the measure to ban gay marriage has grown among voters in the state over an eleven day period — most especially among young voters.

According to the poll, likely California voters overall now favor passage of Proposition 8 by a five-point margin, 47 percent to 42 percent. Ironically, a CBS 5 poll eleven days prior found a five-point margin in favor of the measure's opponents.

The only demographic group to significantly change their views during this period were younger voters — considered the hardest to poll and the most unpredictable voters — who now support the measure after previously opposing it.

It should be noted that the poll, conducted statewide Oct. 4 and 5 among 670 likely voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percent, and the pollster continued to label the race too close to call — just as it did eleven days ago.

"Polling on ballot measures in general is an inexact science, and polling on homosexuality in general is a tricky business. So, not too much should be made of the 5 points that separates 'Yes' and 'No' today," concluded a summary of the results prepared by SurveyUSA.

Unchanged from the two recent polls: Those in the Inland Empire and the Central Valley continue to back Proposition 8, while those in the Bay Area remain opposed. Those in the greater Los Angeles area also remained largely split.

Not surprisingly, support for a gay marriage ban was strongest among those who considered themselves conservatives and identified themselves as regular churchgoers. Opposition was strongest amongst liberals and those who are less religious.

Now this illustrates what an highly effective ad can do. Mr. Gavin Newsom may have guaranteed the passage of Proposition 8 "Whether he likes it or not!".

Check out this previous thread about a new Catholic University in San Diego who's students are putting out YouTube videos for Prop 8 and Prop 4.

If you're in the wedding business and choose not to sell your products/services to a gay couple your company will be sued out of existence unless this amendment passes.

I'm hoping that young people understand this and are responding accordingly.

What it is saying is that young people are voting for the protection of marriage, the marriage between a man and a woman only.

“What it is saying is that young people are voting for the protection of marriage, the marriage between a man and a woman only.”

All those years of queer indoctrination have apparently failed. Good! Hopefully the same can be said for the Communist indoctrination!!!

Yes, this Yes on Prop 8 is a really great ad, especially with that jacka** Newsom screeching and carrying on.

Let’s get out and vote, CA, and hope this passes!

If I didn’t know otherwise I could not tell if the add was for or against Prop 8.

Ironically, a CBS 5 poll eleven days prior found a five-point margin in favor of the measure's opponents.

What is ironic about that? First one side was ahead, then the other side was ahead. Maybe "irony" means, "Whoa, check it out. it's like, totally different now. It's all whatchamacallit. Opposite!"

If that is the case please disregard my question.

I thought that Newsom was taunting the opposition when he gave that speech. For him to get out there and proclaim that, whether we like it or not, that this wave will move east from California is not going to set well with people opposed to the gay agenda. It can only harden opposition among more moderate people who might have gone along with the idea of domestic partners/civil union status.

Prop 8 was behind only weeks ago and now it’s ahead by about 5 points. Things may be turning around, even here in the Socialst Republic of Kalifornia..

If I didn’t know otherwise I could not tell if the add was for or against Prop 8.

That's my thought. There's a difference between being in a voting booth and trying to read something for understanding when yes means no and no means yes, and listening to someone on a telephone where you might not have fully understood the question.

I'd be really surprised if this passed, and I think we can depend on the forces aligned against it to make sure people who are on their side know what no means by Election Day.
