Palin says God blessed America with oil and gas

ELON, N.C. (AP) - Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said Thursday that God blessed the nation with oil and gas resources and other forms of energy that should be tapped to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign suppliers.

The Alaska governor told supporters at Elon University that she and GOP presidential nominee John McCain will develop new energy sources.

"God has so richly blessed this land, not just with the oil and the gas, but with wind and the hydro, the geothermal and the biomass," Palin said. "We'll tap into those."

Palin said some of the countries the U.S. relies on for energy use their resources "as a weapon." And she said the billions spent each year on oil imports should be circulated within the country "for the sake of the nation's security."

"We need to drill here and drill now," Palin said as the crowd chanted "drill baby, drill." A protester at the back of the crowd shouted "No blood for oil."

But Palin remains an asset to McCain in the South, where GOP voters had remained skeptical of him until he put her on the ticket. She appeals to Southern voters by talking about God, gun rights and abortion _ shoring up aspects of McCain's lacking Southern credentials.

"She's a hunter. She opposes abortion. She's religious," said John Shirley, 63, of Pittsboro, who cited those issues as among his top concerns. "She reflects a lot of the values we have here in the South."

'Sarah-liscious': Seen at the Palin rally Thursday
October 16, 2008 - 5:42PM
By Mike Wilder / Times-News

ELON - Like her or not, few would call Sarah Palin boring.

That made for unusually colorful campaign buttons, T-shirts and signs at her political rally at Elon University on Thursday.

Many focused on the former beauty queen's physical appearance. Others played on the self-proclaimed hockey mom's convention acceptance speech joke that "lipstick" is the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull.

Here's a sampling:

-- "I'm proud to be voting for the Hot Chick!" This bold statement on a campaign button was accompanied by a photo of Palin from her time as Miss Wasilla, the Alaska town where she was later mayor.

-- Along similar lines, one campaign button proclaimed Palin "The Hottest VP from the Coolest State."

-- "Sarah-liscious," accompanied by the image of a lipstick print.

-- "Vote for the Man with the Lipstick-Wearing Pitbull."

-- "Read My Lipstick."

-- "Sarah Barracuda," a reference to Palin's nickname earned by her aggressive high school basketball play.

-- "You Go, Girl!" seen on campaign buttons and signs.

-- NObama. No explanation needed.

-- "Drill, baby, drill!" a reference to the McCain-Palin campaign's emphasis on finding new domestic oil.

-- "Mothers of 5 rock," seen on a sign one woman held up. As you'd guess, that's the number of children Pain has.

-- "Extra chromosome equals extra love," written on a sign Palin mentioned seeing in the crowd while giving her speech. She and her husband's youngest son was born this year with Down Syndrome.

-- Actor and comedian D.L. Hughley showed up with signs proclaiming "Palin-Hughley 2012," an apparent effort to spoof Palin as lacking credibility. Some students briefly held up the signs and cheered.

-- Five Elon students painted their chests to spell Palin's last name. (Yes, they were male). Five students from Alamance Christian School were a little less bold, spelling her name with letters painted on T-shirts. They were David Freeman, Billy Kephart, Cabot Basden, Kevin Cottingham and Patrick Avery.

-- Political items on sale at the rally included decks of playing cards featuring mostly Republican political figures. But Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is the joker in each deck.

-- "Got within 10 feet of Sarah Palin today ... (oh, and her red high heels rocked!)" Posted on a teenage female Palin fan's Facebook page three hours after the rally ended.

Among more random T-shirt slogans at the event:

-- "Real Men Love Jesus" and

-- "Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one bird."

Don’t forget the “3%” canard - the US has what may end up having over 40% of the worlds energy resources..

Do you have a good source on that? I know darn well that with oil shale (and perhaps counting oil sands and oil shale in Canada) that the U.S. has plenty of oil left, but, some hard numbers from a good source would be great to e-mail around. I don’t understand why Palin & McCain do not correct that 3% figure...
