The ink is barely dry on this mornings paper and the Obama camp is already hinting that Gen. Colin Powell could play a pivotal role in an Obama administration.
The cynic would say that was exactly what was intended with yesterdays endorsement. Gen. Powell saw the writing on the wall, and figured he better get while the gettin was still good.
I disagree. Colin Powell is an admired friend; one whom I know rises above the political winds and the spoils of victory. If what the cynics say were true, wed be addressing him as President Powell in the wake of the successful Gulf War.
But as much as I admire and respect him, Powell made the wrong choice yesterday. Unless hes changed his party affiliation, Gen. Powell is still a Republican, and Sen. Obama is as liberal as they come. Just ask yourself this: If there were a white liberal Democrat running for president against McCain, would Gen. Powells decision been any different? Would his announcement on "Meet the Press" been any less prominent? The point is its easy to get caught up in the potential significance of this election, and I think thats what happened with Gen. Powell.
I cant say I didnt have similar feelings myself. Sure, when Obama first came on the scene, I felt that sense of history being made. I still do. But theres so much more that makes a man (or woman) right for the highest office in the land, and frankly, its those doubts that should have caused Gen. Powell to give further pause to his decision.
As electrifying as President Obama would be, how quickly would that luster wear off should the winter months bring a greater Afghanistan threat? Or the Russians wade deeper into the former Soviet republics? You have to imagine the worlds tyrants will test Obama from day one.
The Illinois state Senate is not the Oval Office. And Gen. Powell would have done well to remember that you dont put your greenest soldiers on the front lines in the heat of battle.

Well said.
The Powell effect is zero. Today’s news is the Biden effect.
But, that's sick and racist! You can't say that Gen. Powell's decision was swayed by race!!!
I wonder what Sec. Powell thinks of the anointed One allowing our nation to be attacked GUARANTEED because he’s so inexperienced and shows weakness and effemininity? Yeah, guess he never thought that one out while he was trying to stay on the good side of Donna Brazile, Sally Quinn, and the rest of the Washington Insider party crowd.
Why won’t Powell come out now and defend/clarify Biden’s remarks? Odd, if he’s the one who is validating Obama’s national security cred.
I was watching MSNBC (no, I didn’t tturn it on - it was on already) in my work’s lunchroom.
They had some analyst or columnist from “The Hill”.
She said that...
1. Colin Powell’s endorsement was an incredibly seismic event for Obamaniac.
2. McCain’s campaign has no message and lurches from talking point to talking point.
3. Obamaniac has a steady message AND appears calm and unruffled.
4. There are not enough undecided voters out there to influence the election for McCain.
In short...Game Over for McCain.
Contrary to what a lot of people think, Powell rode in on Schwarzkopf’s coat tails.
Powell is a liberal and will act like a liberal in all things.
I just received a plea from the Obama Campaign (to one of my online aliases) begging for money to help Obama win in the swing states. This is not the memo from a campaign that thinks it’s already won. We may see soon that even with 5X the money, Obama just couldn’t fool enough people.
If it’s on MSNBC, it must be true.
Yup, because Mac has won the game and bambi is a pathetic loser.....as he always has been.
I wasted my time reading your post and it turns out you didn’t read the article?
I’ll know better next time, Gooch.
Ever since the nomination, the theme has been one of “getting even,” where guilt doesn’t work, solidarity kicks in; all this to a backdrop of erstwhile reparations in the form of huge promises from the treasury under the new leader of the “free” world.
Powell’s reputation is pretty much shot. That’s also true for Ken “Cakewalk” Adelman who also endorsed Obama. Powell may be able to drop in from time to time, but I doubt Obama would give him a job.
the Obama camp is already hinting that Gen. Colin Powell could play a pivotal role in an Obama administrationHmmmm, 0bama wants to put a former Bushie in his administration... that doesnt sound like CHANGE to me...
