I think that Miss Noonan may have unconsciously touched on what is really going on here when she accuses Mrs. Palin - who is attracting crowds as big if not bigger than any Reagan ever drew - of being a "follower not a leader."
Miss Noonan's unconscious fear may be that it will be precisely Ms. Palin (and others like her) who will be among the leaders of the about to be re-born conservative movement.
I suspect that the conservative movement we start re-building on the ashes of November 4th (even if Mr. McCain wins) will have little use for over-written, over-delicate commentary.
The new movement will be plain spoken and social networked up from the internetted streets, suburbs and small towns of America. It certainly will not listen very attentively to those conservatives who idolatrize Mr. Obama and collaborate in heralding his arrival. They may call their commentary "honesty." I would call it - at the minimum - blindness.
The new conservative movement will be facing a political opponent that will soon reveal itself to be both multiculturalists and Euro-socialist. We will be engaged in a struggle to the political death for the soul of the country.
As I did at the beginning of and throughout the Buckley/Goldwater/Reagan/Gingrich conservative movement, I will try to lend my hand. I will certainly do what I can to make it a big-tent conservative movement. But just as in every great cause, one question has to be answered correctly: Whose side are you on?

Way to go Tony.
Blankley is right, Noonan is unconsious.
Tony, I’m right there with ya.
Individual liberty and economic freedom on the rise. If God forbids, Obama wins, with each ‘I told you so’ share the truth. Reality bites!
What's needed to make this new conservative vision work and win elections, are sharp people who, like Ronald Reagan, are the smartest people in the room but don't feel compelled to let everybody know it.
Amen! Say it loud, proud and often!
Frank Barnes and his sidekicks at Fox will also be left like the NOW gang is now after supporting Clinton. Just a footnote in the annals of history.
If that’s a sacred commandment, there are plenty of apostates right here on FR.
Boycott Peggy Noonan.
Indeed, when all is said and done, we should have a wiki page or something like it to list every one of the Vichy Republicans.
Peggy Noonan
George Will
K Parker
David Frum
David Brooks
Christopher Buckley
That is a good start.
We will have very little use for the Noonans and the Wills of the world, that’s for sure.
I have been predicting this since the 2006 election disaster. I watched the whole thing in 1992 with a lame Republican congress and president and a rebirth of not only conservatives, but ordinary Joe Plumber’s in the House that were more interested in bettering this country, than power. I am afraid, as proved with the financial bailout, we have lost our way with the establishment / Washington insider Pols. Our party has become the corrupt, lazy, greedy and cowardly party it replaced in 1995. Like animal farm. And yes, Pelosi, Reid and Obama is a nightmare. But they will be a national nightmare.
Stop taking people OFF the tax roles. 40% that pay no taxes want the wealth spread around.
As much as I wish this would come true, I have serious doubts.
The question is, how are we going to get the RNC to support anyone but Amnesty supporting, spendocrat RINOs nominated to any high office? The “leadership” only seems to listen to the media on who is electable, which is how we ended up with McCain, Mitt, Rudy et. al.
It’s sad, Noonan had a great book about Reagan.
haw haw. delicate commentary.
Everytime you say “I told you so” they will reply “It’s Bush’s fault and you’re racist for saying that.”
Hey, a list of fake conservatives!! Sa-weeet!
