Poll: Obama edges ahead of McCain in Montana
Associated Press ^ | 10/23/08 | MATT GOURAS

A new poll shows that Democrat Barack Obama could be edging ahead of Republican John McCain in Montana.

Obama is at 44 percent and John McCain is at 40 percent in the Montana State University-Billings poll released Thursday. The poll reverses others from earlier in the fall that showed McCain with a lead in the state.

The poll of 403 Montanans was conducted from Thursday though Monday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Both Obama and McCain did a pretty good job in the poll of holding their party's base, but Obama held an advantage among self-described independents.

By a large margin, respondents said they thought McCain had run a more negative campaign.

Predictably, McCain got better marks on the foreign relations issue while Obama scored better on the economy.

..somebody posted a news story from 1972 which said McGovern was closing in on Nixon ROFL—I think this is in the same genre of story...

The issue with Montana if it is close is that it has a large libertarian block of voters which could sway the election. It affected the Senate seat last election and the Republican lost.

Anyday now we'll see a headline saying:

I’m beginning to think you’re right. Why else would the commie-bommies be releasing these polls that are so blantantly wrong?

Having spent some time in Montana. I know that a majority of it’s residents are definately conservative.

What you hear almost everyday, is their anger at the college towns especially in MSU Billings and University of Montana in Missoula. The students are a large enough block of voters, to tip the political scale of a state with a population of around one million.

A North Dakota TV station’s poll will sit really well in Montana. North Dakota is the butt of jokes in Montana.

The poll:

If this year's presidential election were being held today, for whom do you think you would vote?

Barack Obama 44.4%

John McCain 40.2%

Ron Paul 4.2%

Bob Barr 1%

Ralph Nader .7%

Undecided 9.5%

Margin of Error is 4.81%.

So, that could mean that McCain is actually up by .81%.
