No on Proposition 6!
No on Prop 6: The Facts | Prop. 6 is ineffective and misguided.

Posted on 10/27/2008 4:27:27 AM PDT by pelliott92

Proposition 6 redirects state funding from anti-crime programs that have been proven to work. Prop. 6 would spend millions to put children in jail and keep them there longer for inconsequential “crimes.” And more 14 year-old children would have to be tried as adults. That money could be spent on education and healthcare, programs proven to reduce crime.

Virtually every criminal justice study of gang problems and high crime communities calls for a coordinated balanced approach that includes community service workers, mental health, drug and alcohol services along with tough law enforcement. Proposition 6 ignores these facts and takes money away from those programs. Prop. 6 doesn’t solve the problem... it’ll make it worse.

The state is already facing federal court orders to spend billions of taxpayer dollars on new prisons and health facilities to reduce overcrowding. Prop. 6 would make the problem more expensive by creating over 30 new crimes, sending more people to prisons and keeping them there longer.

And this is bad why?

Dear kindly Sergeant Krupke,
You gotta understand,
It’s just our bringin’ up-ke
That gets us out of hand.
Our mothers all are junkies,
Our fathers all are drunks.
Golly Moses, natcherly we’re punks!

ACTION AND JETS
Gee, Officer Krupke, we’re very upset;
We never had the love that ev’ry child oughta get.
We ain’t no delinquents,
We’re misunderstood.
Deep down inside us there is good!

ACTION
There is good!

ALL
There is good, there is good,
There is untapped good!
Like inside, the worst of us is good!

We (Myself and my wife) are in agreement with Tom McClintock that it is a “mixed bag” of a proposition, but that the good does outweigh the bad, therefore will vote YES on Prop. #6.

In normal times I would agree with you. If Obama gets in office, the prisons will be filled with political prisoners, and kept there longer.

Putting more people in jail and keeping them there longer actually saves money over the long run...more thugs locked being kept from committing more crimes and injuring more people.

Same stupid arguments were made against 3 Strikes, and since it’s implementation, both violent crime and crime overall have fallen consistently. This is one of the ONLY legitimate expenditures of state tax dollars.

I'm voting NO on Prop 6, but not for the reasons cited by the poster.
I dislike the negatives cited by McClintock (below) more than I like the positives:
Prop. 6 Police and Law Enforcement Funding. YES

This is a tough call. My favorite provision is prohibiting the release on bail of illegal aliens charged with violent crimes. Its principal purpose is to lock up an increasing portion of the state budget for local law enforcement. Law enforcement should be government’s top priority, but I don’t like auto-pilot spending or using state resources for local programs. I also don’t like its weakening of the hearsay rule. On balance I think it does more good than harm, but it’s a very mixed bag.

I can understand your trepidation.

But Senator McClintock said, "On balance I think it does more good than harm".

I agree.

I respect that.
I just thought I’d add a differing opinion and point out that it isn’t only lefties that might oppose it.

TOO MANY initiatives these days!
