Restaurant robber gets just deserts (My title, article to be linked later)

Just heard on the radio. In essence, a robber used a screwdriver to hold up a restaurant. He rode away on a bicycle. Unfortunately he fell off the bicycle and impaled himself on the screwdriver - and died.

Still trying to find the unfortunate part. Did his body fall on someone and hurt them?

I caved and looked it up in the dictionary. It is correct to be spelled dessert for the meaning I intended. Desert is sand, or generally, to abandon something or someone.
