Weekly town hall meeting-style debates for the last two months, as proposed by Sen. John McCain, would have done much to inform the public about the issues and about McCain's long, clear record as a moderate who works across party lines. Sen. Barack Obama, whose record is very thin, shrewdly rejected the joint tour that could have given swing voters a more substantial comparison of the candidates.
The Republican hasn't fared well in the traditional campaign that ensued, though voters caught a glimpse of the real McCain when he firmly told a supporter there was no reason to "fear" his rival, publicly squelching the notion that Obama is anything other than a patriotic American who has run a masterful campaign.
We encourage those who are still uncommitted and those who vote on the basis of a candidate's qualifications instead of party label to give McCain's experience a closer look and to consider the consequences of concentrating too much political and economic power in the hands of one party.
A McCain veto in the White House would provide a check on a Congress likely to take a leftward swing in this election. Where principles are on the line, McCain has a history of standing firm.

Hopefully, with the Journal's statewide circulation, the endorsement will give some pause to consider the implications of a unstoppable leftwing government in charge of the United States. Likewise let's hope that the NM McCain campaign can put together a two-day ad to publicize this statewide.

Is NM still in play for McCain?
*BUMP*
It’s an uphill battle.
Is the Albuquerque Journal influntial?
New Mexico is an oil producing state and Obama’s Windfall Profits Tax on oil should scare the hell out the New Mexico voters.
Most New Mexicans have little to do with the oil and gas business, plus we have more than our share of environuts.
Folks in the oil producing parts of the state are sparse compared to Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
Isn’t this the state’s largest paper and is the most read?
I am surprised at the various paper endorsements of this weekend supporting McCain. I think they wait until the last minute intentionally.
Something seems strange because who would have thought this paper would endorse McCain????
That’s ok, Hold Virginia and he wins. Why you ask; because CO,NV,OH,FL will not turn blue. Yes, that is without winning NH,PA,IA or NM. Incidentally, plenty of pollsters had IA going to Kerry
It can be for any undecideds out there.
The McCain camp thinks it is. His last three stops before returning to AZ tomorrow night are CO, NM and NV.
Agreed. And yesterday they endorsed Republicans for two of the three vacant House seats. And the fact that these two races are close means it could make the difference between whether NM goes from two Republicans in the US House to none at all.
Dave, which two house seats did the Journal endorse? Didn’t see yesterday’s paper. Thanks.
I'm worried about Heinrich winning District One. I knew he was a liberal, but unaware of his connection with Dave Foreman and the "Earth First" radicals, including those who performed ecoterrorism. I hope White's ads exposing him help Darren win.
Anyone got the rest of it?
I was out there in the middle of October, through both Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and my evaluation of the sign/bumper sticker count would say it was not in play with overwhelming Obama visibility so this endorsement highly surprises me.
White in District I and Tinsley in District II. They endorsed Baca in Udall’s District III.
And on the same page as the McCain endorsement, they endorsed Udall as Pete Domenici’s replacement. Go figure!
I’m wondering if Senator Bingaman’s controversial remarks on the Fairness Doctrine on KKOB a few weeks back may have something to do with this.
And I see in the Journal online today, all polls in NM favoring the dims.
