Legal proceedings and court orders are public record, unless sealed (which this was not - Obama missed this one when he was sealing records!). The reporter - who was a Brit, and the British, of course, have a long-standing Kenyan connection - obviously picked up the rumor somewhere and then tracked down the info. That’s what reporting used to be in the good old days.
The story came from a book...Obama’s book!
They used his book to track down the aunt.

How The Times followed a trail to find Barack Obama’s aunt
The trail that led to “Aunt Zeituni”, the relative of Barack Obama who was traced by The Times last week, started with Mr Obama’s memoir, one of the most widely read political autobiographies of all time.
The Democrat campaign has implied that the story might have come from Republican sources – “the American people are ... pretty suspicious of things that are dumped in the marketplace 72 hours before a campaign,” said Mr Obama’s chief strategist David Axelrod yesterday.
In fact, the story came from a book that has been read by millions, including just about everyone connected to the Obama campaign.

The New York Times released the news, don’t ya know!
You have to know her birth date to find her on the voter rolls. I’m sure she probably is registered. I also suspect she was probably collecting SSI, meaning she had some kind of false Social Security number. That would be interesting to find out!
This triggered a six-week search, one that would lead eventually to Boston and to Aunt Zeituni. Public record searches found traces of O. Onyango Obama, Uncle Omar’s real name, in Boston. A friend and a former landlady said that he now uses the name Obama Onyango.
At that time Auntie Zeituni had been working at Kenya Breweries. Inquires about her whereabouts also met a blank response from the family, however.
The Times called the Zeituni Onyango in Boston three times. The first time a woman said that she “went to California”. The second time a woman said: “She died last summer.” The third time a woman said in French that she did not know her at that address.
Uncle Omar has still not been found.
Whatever the Democrat campaign may imply, there is nothing suspicious about the story or its timing. The only mystery, perhaps, is how so many people read Mr Obama’s book in the US without wondering what might have happened to the mysterious relative, lost in America.
Sandy, I don’t want to split hairs, but there is no comparison to what happened to Obama’s aunt and the laws that were obviously violated by Ohio state employees (political appointments at that) in the plumber incident.
The only information in Aunty’s that was reported was information available to the public at large. From what I can tell, absolutely no personal information was released. If it had, I’d be with you. But, the fact of the matter is she (the Aunt) was subject to court hearing and the result from that hearing was reported.
It’s very much like a court stenographer or bailiff telling someone about a murder trial they worked. If they were to discuss that case and its outcome at some latter date, isn’t violating ANY procedural rules or regulations. Now, if sealed or confidential findings were also disclosed, then that could be a problem. That’s not what happened hear.
I see there’s still some real reporters left somewhere in the world.
One would think that this is satire, but it seems that there's plenty of folks in Washington that feel that illegals have more rights than citizens. When are the feds going to investigate the illegal investigations into Joe the Plumber's private life?
Investigate who knew she was deportable at Obama's swearing in in 2005! Investigate which MSM outlets supressed breaking this story! (It was broken by a UK paper.) Investigate who got her her visa in 1975. Investigate why she was not only living on the taxpayer's dime, but was even being payed by the project's manager for being a "building organizer" (like BO the "community organizer" getting people other people's money).
The other half was already under the bus when she made her $260 donation of taxpayer-supplied funds.
Zot! You got them! Hey, while the feds are at it they should also investigate who leaked the fact that Mohammad Atta and the other 911 hijackers were illegally in the US?

A neighbor said she was often not home on weekends.
In Boston, Lydia Agro, communications director for the Housing Authority, said Onyango had been screened and approved for public housing as an “eligible non-citizen” when she moved in in 2003.
Agro said the authority doesn’t believe it needs to take any action to remove Onyango from public housing despite the order.
State law forbids the authority from even asking Onyango about her immigration status. That means the federal deportation order has no bearing on Onyango’s eligibility for the state-funded project where she lives.
Too bad the government doesn’t spend as much energy, time and money investigating illegal aliens as it does political enemies of Democrats.

There’s an Orwellian sentence for you. We have an investigation into the DISCLOSURE that somebody did something ILLEGAL. If I see somebody committing a crime, I’ll be sure not to tell the police!
How about an investigation into why she’s still in the country? Or an investigation into how she got public housing? This country gets more and more bizarre every day.
