Voter, 92, takes ambulance to the polls

Determined to participate in a history-making election, 92-year-old Betty Owen rode in an ambulance to her polling place Tuesday and cast her ballot in a parking lot.

An election judge and a support worker climbed into the ambulance with an electronic voting machine at the Tobin Library at Oakwell so Owen, dressed in her Sunday finest and resting comfortably on a gurney, could make her selections.

"And you have voted," precinct judge Sam Green said after Owen pushed a red button to finalize her choices. "You know, you look so pretty in that red dress."

Owen grinned. Green leaned over and kissed her on top of her head.

"Don't tell my wife," he said with a smile.

Last week the doctor told me my wife had three days, maybe two weeks to live. He was wrong and changed his evaluation a day later. In the meantime, since she thought she was dying, she at least wanted to vote for McCain. I brought the early registration letters to the hospital. She is not out of the woods yet but considering she has leukemia at least it is looking a little brighter thanks to James Cancer Hospital OSU. Praise the lord, John McCain (and God I never thought I would say this) Ohio State University.

What? That can't be legal. Was the ambulance legally determined to be it's own precinct? Did they make sure this new precinct had it's required feet of no signs, etc.? Am I disenfranchised because someone didn't bring a voting machine to my front door?

May God bless you, your wife, McCain, Palin, and America, in no particular order.

I pray that she beats it. Do not believe a negative report. Go positive, get a second opinion, check out all your alternatives. God bless you both.

Hmm, she voted against Roosevelt but now for a communist who’s going to make the New Deal look like a harmless toy. Odd. Well, I guess if she first voted Democrat with Kennedy, she’s hopelessly mired in style over substance.

Regardless, gotta admire her tenacity and seriousness about participating in the electoral process so I’ll give her thumbs up for that.

And I’ll pray for your wife, Radl.

It shows that some people would crawl over broken glass to vote against Obama. I have another story of this. Our neighbor called at dinnertime tonight wanting a ride to the polls for him and his wife. The man just got out of the hospital after having a mini-stroke with bleeding and had been in since Saturday. Of course, we were delighted to take him to vote. I think he just forced them to let him go so he could go vote.

Oh, puh-leeze.

Ambulance =/= taxi.

If voting is so important, perhaps she should have considered doing it absentee or early.

And there’s no indication that she paid for it herself. Last time a buddy of mine had an ambulance ride, it was $600 for a seven-mile trip.

This story pisses me off.

“Owen’s daughter, Gail Grisell, arranged the ambulance ride at the last minute after she blew her mother’s opportunity to get an absentee ballot last month. Owen hasn’t been able to walk since suffering a stroke four years ago.

On Tuesday, Americana Ambulance gave the frail women, who eats from a feeding tube, a free trip from her home at a nearby retirement residence.”

What’s the problem?
