Voters yesterday overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, making getting caught with less than an ounce of pot punishable by a civil fine of $100. The change in the law means someone found carrying dozens of joints will no longer be reported to the state's criminal history board.

With about 90 percent of the state's precincts reporting last night, voters favored the Question 2 proposition 65 percent to 35 percent.

Go California. What's next, cocaine, heroin, prostitution. Way to provide an example for the youth! I say let that state secede. The rest of us won't mind.

The youth support Obama. The youth can go to hell. May their lives be short and and their fixes be overdoses.

This was Massachusetts, Not CA. Getting tougher to tell the two states apart.

Good for them. The war on pot is incompatible with a free republic, in my opinion. However, it's still only nibbling at the problem. If it is a minor offense to possess marijuana, it should be a minor offense to SELL marijuana. You can't have a buyer without a seller. Either pot should be illegal or it should be legal.

This kind of thing helps the casual pot smoker, which is fine by me, but still avoids the fundamental question. Then again, we've got the Feds with their Controlled Substance Act dictating to the states, which is in my view unrepublican and perhaps unconstitutional as well.

The potheads will move to Michigan, where it will be legal to have about 12 pounds! ( up to 12 plants in possession)

I agree with you. While I don’t see pot as the issue at all. I see a strong statist intrusion into personal liberties, and an unwillingness of the public to accept the risk inherent in personal freedom.

San Franciscans rejected decriminalizing prostitution...

Can’t say I disagree with the people of Massachusetts on this one though.

And no, I don’t smoke the wacky weed (never had, never will).

Hear, hear! I don’t advocate using drugs, but it is a voluntary choice, and it is not the business of government to regulate what you put in your body.

This is where some of you will start calling me a pot head. For the record I have never used any illegal drug, and have no criminal record. Just thought I would nip the inevitable in the bud now and save time for everybody.

I view pot the same way I view porn. It should be legal. But it should be for adults only. And it shouldn't be shoved in anyone's face. It's ok to have a porno mag if you want, but it should be tucked away somewhere, not on the coffee table, not in a dentist's waiting room. It's a private choice people can agree or disagree with, and if people will respect everyone else's sensibilities and show some decorum, it doesn't have to be a big deal.

I agree completely.

I was asking my wife last night, “Who will you buy pot from, if they can only hold an ounce or so?”

I think the whole pot thing is a red herring. I think that cocaine, heroin, etc are harmful to society. I think that pot is no worse than alcohol. If we are going to be against horrible mind altering drugs, lets go back to prohibition.

I strongly disagree with the people of MA, on the same ballot was an opportunity to repeal the State Income Tax, if this was about Liberty and not merely getting high, then both should have passed muster.

What this boils down to is “I wanna get high, and steal my neighbors monies via taxes”.

And that is why MA is a mushy mess, there is no consistency.

True. And it's anti-republican. The Controlled Substance Act is wrong in the same way that Roe v Wade is wrong. In each case, a branch of the Fed gubmint dictated to the states on matters where they should have no say. If we're going to have statists to buck heads with, better to have them merely state level statists. The feds are almost impossible to beat. This is one reason the GOP loses its argument about small gubmint. It's for small gubmint when it suits them. Big gubmint when it suits them. Same as the DEMs.
