Statement on Proposition 8 Passing by Ron Prentice, Chairman of ProtectMarriage.com – Yes on 8 November 04, 2008

This is a great day for marriage. The people of California stood up for traditional marriage and reclaimed this great institution. We are gratified that voters chose to protect traditional marriage and to enshrine its importance in the state constitution. We trust that this decision will be respected by all Californians.

The Yes on Proposition 8 campaign has been the single largest, most powerful grassroots movement in the history of American ballot initiative campaigns. We raised approximately $40 million from over 70,000 individual contributors. We recruited the active support of over 100,000 volunteers who gave tirelessly of their time and energies to our cause. We could not have won without them! These dedicated volunteers have visited millions of homes, made millions of phone calls, distributed over one million yard signs and displayed one million bumper strips. The silent majority is alive and well in California.

Proposition 8 has always been about restoring the traditional definition of marriage. It doesn’t discriminate or take rights away from anyone. Gay and lesbian domestic partnerships will continue to enjoy the same legal rights as married spouses. Our coalition has no plans to seek any changes in that law.

While it will take a few weeks to finish counting all the votes, Proposition 8 takes effect at midnight tonight. Just as it was before the Supreme Court’s ruling, only marriage between a man and a woman will be valid or recognized in California, regardless of when or where performed.

This has been a hard-fought campaign on both sides. Now that the people of California have decided this issue, we hope there can be a healing among all and a continued respect for the diverse views that have been expressed during this campaign.

The outcome of this race is being closely followed in every state in the nation, and in countries throughout the world. California’s vote in favor of traditional marriage should give the silent majority comfort that they do have a voice and can and should stand up for this precious institution in legislatures throughout the world. Marriage is between a man and a woman.

Never going to happen.

This is a War.

The only way there will be any healing is if our side decides to give up, or we are able to convince enough of the yuts (youths and immature adults) that Morals have meaning and worth in today's society.

In spite of having to face every dirty trick in the book, including Jerry Browns dishonest rewrite of the proposition, the people of California voted against aberrant behavior being viewed as normal. Good for them. Now to see how a leftist court figures out how to ignore the vote.

The fact CA has voted now THREE times in the past few years to not allow even the most modest parental notification law on abortion doesn’t match your suggestion. Additionally the marriage initiative dropped about 10% in support from the last time it was on the ballot. Interestingly, it looks like the strong black turnout spurred by the Obama candidacy was the key to winning this initiative. Whites in CA voted NO on prop 8. (warning: this requires believing exit polls, process this data with caution).

Unfortunately, I think CA is center-left on social issues and dead-center on spending issues. Even a few years ago, our state was center-right on spending, but the “gimme” group is spiraling out of control quickly here.

Sorry to be negative, but I see difficult days ahead in CA.

Goldstate is right. I live in Santa Barbara and this race has destroyed one friendship and damaged a couple of other friendships. This is a very emotional issue for the pro-gay crowd. This is really about freedom of speech. The pro-gay crowd will not tolerate any difference of opinion. I feel sad about the friendship I lost. The person said that I was a bigot and hateful because I was voting yes on 8. The other friendships damaged were people who had gay family members and they also seemed to think a no vote was a personal attack.

It was a great day for democracy also! Er.. well at least while it lasted.

Headline:

Historic day! Record number of voters. U.S. Democracy at its finest.

Never going to happen.

This is a War.

And this was just one small battle...

"...when in a war, foreign or intestine, the enemies get a final victory, so as, the forces of the Commonwealth keeping the field no longer, there is no further protection of subjects in their loyalty, then is the Commonwealth dissolved, and every man at liberty to protect himself by such courses as his own discretion shall suggest unto him."

It’s unfortunate but they are not really friends but people blinded by zeal that lack priorities.
What these loons are saying/thinking is that anyone who just wants to preserves traditional marriage hates gay people. They are arrogating that to be the only motivation, and not ,eg, a profamily desire to protect traditional marriage; that is really narrow minded and wrong.

Michael Savage was right - liberalism is a mental disorder.

I agree with you, but I am still sad about the loss. This was a working relationship that had been mutually beneficial and enjoyable and I will miss this person. That said, I refuse to be silenced by the intimidating tactics of the Lavender Mafia. I am entitled to Free Speech. The Bill of Rights does not specifically include the right of same sex people to marry, but it does include Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion, two things that are not tolerated by the pro-gay lobby.

I hear ya. Perhaps you can communicate to these former friends this:
There is no real tolerance without tolerating differences of opinion.
And leave it at that.

As for me, I have to entertain my move-on.org Mom to T-day, who has already sent gloating messages about O’s victory. It will be interesting.

Perhaps you can communicate to these former friends this: There is no real tolerance without tolerating differences of opinion.

This person sent me an election eve email unsolicited simply stating, "I hope you get cancer and die for voting yes on 8".

I had discussed my opinion with him at a nightclub a few weeks previously and when he began to get hot under the collar I ended it by saying we should agree to disagree and thought that was the end of it. After the 'hope you die of cancer email' I wrote back and told him that was a horrible thing to say. He then countered by calling me a bigot and told me he could never be friends with someone "who hates gay people".

I have no hatred for gay people. His distortion of my opinion was nothing short of a lie. This is not a relationship that can be saved unless this fellow really apologizes in a sincere manner. That is not going to happen but even if it did I will never feel the same toward him.
