The 2008 presidential election marked the first time Florida Hispanics backed a Democrat since exit polling began in the 1980s. BY CASEY WOODS cwoods@MiamiHerald.com Rose Pujol, a Cuban-American, pushed hard for Barack Obama's presidential victory. The Miami resident attended the Democratic convention, volunteered for the Florida campaign, and put up a life-size cutout of Obama in her Coconut Grove offices.
''He takes people from all walks of life and gets them behind him,'' said Pujol, 53. ``I wanted to be part of that America.''
Such enthusiasm paid off for the Democratic candidate in Florida's elections: the state's Hispanics voted for him in overwhelming numbers and arguably handed him his victory in the Florida victory.
Obama won 52 percent of the state's Hispanic vote, compared to 42 percent for John McCain, according to exit polls done by the Democratic polling firm Bendixen & Associates -- making this election the first time the state's Hispanics have backed a Democratic presidential candidate since polling of Hispanics began in the 1980s

When The One starts propping up the Castro regime, we need to make sure these folks know it.
It’s a skin tone thing.
I don’t understand how Cubans, Catholics, or Jewish could vote for Obama.
Cubans no longer constitute the majority of Florida’s Hispanic population.
It’s unlikely the Americans of Cuban heritage voted for Hussein the Marxist, but I can guarantee you the Mexicans and Central Americans did, since they are enthralled with socialism.
Well the Dems play the race card better, they know how to paint one side as racist...Republicans take the high road...to no avail of course.
We’d rather spend our time telling black people MLK was a Republican. What a joke.
“Cubans no longer constitute the majority of Floridas Hispanic population.”
That’s true. Mexicans make up a HUGE portion of the hispanics in Florida, and Mexicans embrace socialism like it’s cold water on a hot and dry summer day. The United States will be a third-world country within 20 years.
Greed comes in many colors.
“Wed rather spend our time telling black people MLK was a Republican. What a joke.”
No kidding. If MLK was anything, he was a communist.
They had Mrs. Jackie Robinson all over the TV. I guess they
didn’t realize he was a republican.
The article did not say Obama won the "Cuban" vote. Cubans have historically voted 80% Republican.
The article said that Obama won the "Hispanic" vote and, as I noted before, Cubans no longer constitute the majority of Hispanics in Florida.
The MSM writer did find a Cuban Obama supporter just like the MSM always found the voter that said that he had "voted Republican all my life until Obama came along".
let's stand by and let the one normalize relations with Cuba right away
.
Hey McCain, how’d that Amnesty thing work out for you?
Or your beloved news media?
Or CFR?
Kissing up to people who hate you never pays, and now you know it, My Friend.
Cubans voted strongly for McCain. Problem is tat Cubans are a minority of hispanics here in Florida.
Cubans are now a minority of latinos in FL and the grandkids much like white anglo kids are more leftist than the ancestors
forget all this minority crap
recapture the white vote in this nation and problem solved
(a wise freeper said this just last night... at least to forget the black vote)
Hispandering is a failed strategy when you get out-hispandered.
Second generation Cuban Americans are big on the welfare state.
Anyone remember them re-registering to republican after Clinton threw Elian Gonzales back into the shark infested waters?
Now they’re all dems again.
I blame the issue of immigration. Who ever thought this was a great issue for Republicans in 2005 should be horsewhipped. Remember what the immigration issue did for Republican governor Pete Wilson? It got him rejected in his re-election bid.
In 2004 President Bush got 45% of the hispanic vote. Yesterday McCain got 29%. We lost the hispanic vote and therefore we lost the election.
Our party really needs to regroup and recharge and branch out to hispanics on issues of abortion, traditional marriage and religion. Otherwise we are doomed.
