BEIJING, Nov. 8 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Hundreds of people attacked police in Shenzhen in southern China after a motorcyclist was killed trying to avoid a traffic checkpoint, state-run media reported Saturday.
About 400 people threw stones and set fire to a police car Friday evening, hours after the motorcyclist was killed near a checkpoint looking for unlicensed vehicles, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Police say the motorcyclist, Li Guochao, 31, had been riding without a license and crashed while trying to flee from the checkpoint, Xinhua reported.
Li's relatives later carried his body to a police station and started setting off firecrackers and causing damage to property, the report said.
The unrest lasted until the early hours Saturday morning and a crowd of about 2,000 people reportedly watched the violence.
Civil disturbances are not uncommon in China, often resulting from disputes over corruption, land seizures or complaints over the heavy- handed enforcement of government regulations.
In one of the most serious recent incidents, two people were killed in China's southwestern Yunnan Province in July when farmers clashed with police over a long-running financial dispute with a rubber company.
