Slowly but surely, voters in the Washington area are purging Republicans from the ranks of local government.
After eight years of an unpopular president and five years of a war most people believe was launched under false pretenses, voters in the District, Maryland and Virginia are taking out their anger on the GOP.
The search-and-destroy mission is nearly complete. While Democrats have long held an advantage in state and local government, until recently both parties claimed their share of victories. Now, though, Democrats have a near monopoly on power in Washington and the close-in suburbs.
Consider:

Should have been posted in quotes (from article, not me):
“So should local Democrats be happy? Perhaps, but there’s peril in this approach. Having watched politicians of all stripes at close range for two decades, I can tell you the system works best when there are checks on government power. Journalists and citizen-activists do their best to shine a spotlight on fraud, incompetence and cronyism, but we don’t have the access to information that elected leaders have. Also, the mere presence of members of the opposition party in the corridors of power acts as a check against abuse. In addition, there are times when local leaders need something from the state or federal government. Being able to deploy members of both parties in the lobbying effort can help open doors.”
Enjoy the consequences.
They can’t hide anymore and blame things on Republicans and Bush (although they still will try for several years). Clinton’s first 2 years were a disaster because he had a Democratic Congress. His fate changed when the Republicans took control in 1994. Bush’s first 6 years went well and his fate changed (for the worse) when Democrats took control in Congress the past 2 years. They can no longer hide.
Okay: I’ll bite.

Ah, yes: that is a sensible way to govern, execute critical military decisions, serve all Americans equally, and promote diversity: apparently, the Demonrats prefer “search-and-destroy” missions against Republicans (who are, after all, still Americans) than going after our real enemies.
All this from the compassionate WAPO.
The political power pendulum is always swinging.
And it will swing again. Guaranteed.
I agree with the author of the article to some extent, namely that state GOP across the US has been dropping the ball. Here in NM I sense that the GOP has fallen asleep, no energy, no hunger. In the NE the GOP feels, at least from NM, that its nonexistent and lethargic.
The new RNC chairman needs to get the local GOP back up to what it used to be. I’m not saying that the local DNC is any better, but it seems to be able to get money together to compete in state races.
I believe that the road back in ‘10 starts at the local level.

******
Better check Oklahoma pal.
Over there, its the RATS that are being systematically purged from the ranks of loval and every type of goverment.
Sounds like the Post can’t get over where that Mason Dixon line was originally drawn and keeps trying to change it
Cool.
What that means?
Well, I’m at a loss for the linguistic term.
Secession is where you take yourself out of the larger entity.
What do you call it if the larger entity divests itself of your little geographic cesspool?
But the real question is when the Democrats begin taking any responsibility for anything that’s gone wrong or bad?
I’d Like to sweep the reds out of congress and the Executive branch come Jan 20 2009!

Little Socialist pun there!
Look at California and New York. Until recently, Republicans had significant influence in each, electing governors, US Senators, and occasional legislative majorities. Now, they have none, and no prospect of regaining any.
It is quite unlikely that the coming separation will be peaceful, and I for one do not welcome that.
The GOP in the NE has disintegrated into socon, country club, and low-tax factions. In New Hampshire, at least, these factions hate each other MUCH more than they dislike Democrats.
Who will they blame now? As rev Wright would say “ the chickens have come home to roost! Sit back and watch the show!
Well metro-DC and once up and coming NC locations like Charlotte can suffer the same fate as places like Detroit and Northern NJ. By invited the infection that is liberalism from places like South Florida, NYC and Boston into their areas taxes will go up, budgets will bloat and businesses will flee. Places like Birmingham Ala, Dallas and Nashville will become the new centers of high tech job growth. All that will be left in DC is business related the bureaucracy. Goodbye Loundes county and I-270 corridor, you aren’t needed anymore. Maybe will Jindal in 2012 we can reclaim Northern Va, due to the heavy influx of Indian immigrants.
Tennessee took on a deeper shade of red this election, too. Republicans now control both state houses for the first time since reconstruction. I hope they don't blow it.
I suppose Tennessee doesn't matter to this inside the beltway elitist author. We're all "bitter clingers" down this way....
