CAIRO, Egypt — Demonstrators in Cairo demanded Tuesday that Saudi Arabia release an Egyptian doctor sentenced to 15 years in prison and 1,500 lashes after he was convicted of malpractice — reportedly after treating a Saudi princess.
His wife said she feared the punishment would kill him.
Raouf Amin el-Arabi, a doctor who has been serving the Saudi royal family for about 20 years, was convicted last year of giving a patient the wrong medication. Egyptian newspapers reported that he was accused of driving a Saudi princess "to addiction."

Gee...I can’t think of any reason other than medical malpractice that a Saudi woman might become addicted to painkillers.
What a pathetic culture. The sooner we can drill here and buy the rest of our oil from Brazil the better.
1500 lashes does sound like a death sentence — or darn near it.
Its things like this that make me question the notion of bringing democracy to the middle east in a reasonable timeframe. These folks are hundreds of years behind other people and a lot of these countries, including our allies, are medieval in a lot of their mentalities. I don’t think bringing modern values of democracy and human rights to the region is a very easy thing at all. It is something worth doing but it will take a LONG time to achieve. Perhaps it can’t even be achieved so long as Islam is there. I don’t know if Islam can be made compatible with the modern world.
I’m sure the fine muslim “scholars” on both sides can puzzle out what to do about this.

The Bible says how many strikes can be done for certain crimes...the founding fathers used that guide for deserters from Washington’s Army but I can’t remember what the limit was.....

Apparently, the 1,500 lashes are going to be spread out over the course of the sentence.
“El-Arabi is in a jail in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah and is believed to have received at least one of his weekly installments of 70 lashes so far.”
70 lashes a week, for 15 years? That almost sounds worse, really. How long before repeated physical and mental trauma or an infection kills this poor guy? It’s likely just as much a death sentence as 1,500 at once, only the agony is going to be extended for a long, long time.
