Law students offer free immigration help to apply for diversity Visa lottery

Law students will be available at the University of Nebraska College of Law on Sunday, November 16 from 1-5 p.m. to provide free help to eligible foreign nationals who want to take part in the diversity visa lottery. The diversity visa lottery is conducted once per year by the U.S. State Department. The lottery offers a chance at permanent residency for foreign nationals whose home country is under-represented in the United States' population. To participate in the lottery applicants must ensure that they are eligible and must fill out an online form. For several years the College of Law's Immigration Clinic has hosted a free clinic to help people complete their diversity visa applications. Law students will be on hand to verify individuals' eligibility, take their photo, and help complete their online application.

"Participating in the lottery doesn't guarantee a visa to the applicant, but it is a free shot at becoming a permanent resident," said Greg McLawsen, one of two law students organizing this year's event. "The lottery is an opportunity for someone who may have no other route to immigrating to the United States," he said.

"Sometimes there is no 'line' for immigrants to get in," said Lyndsay Bonwell, the event's co-organizer, "so this lottery may be their only pathway to citizenship." Those interested in the lottery should call the Immigration Clinic at (402) 472-3271. The College of Law is located on UNL's east campus, off Holdrege near 40th St.

The Immigration Clinic is a program within the College of Law's Civil Clinic. Students in the Immigration Clinic provide free legal representation to local clients involved in immigration proceedings. Students appear in court on behalf of clients and provide legal counseling. "The primary purpose of the clinic is to provide a teaching tool for students, but we also provide a service to our community," said Prof. Kevin Ruser, the clinic supervisor.

I am guessing that only Greenlanders, Icelanders and Antarticans would qualify.

I'd support a "diversity visa lottery" for those whose skills are under-represented in the United States. Bring in doctors, nurses, engineers, and skilled workers! As for lawyers and union organizers, I wonder if there is a country with a shortage that would like some extras.

I’m French and I applied.
I’ve played this lottery already 8 years and never won.
I wasn’t sure to apply this year or not since you’re headed for a depression with Obama. But I have hopes for 2012 or maybe even 2010 if you change the Congress.

I can’t believe some people need help to apply. It’s done in less than 2 minutes and couln’t be any easier.

It never hurts to apply. You can always back out if you think things economically will be bad.

Bon chance, mon ami!

I was thinking along the same line as you, but added community organizer to my list!

That must mean Mexicans. To hear them tell it they’re ‘under-prepresented’ until this country is 95% Latino.

Australia used to be in that category.
Russia might be a good place to send them. Russia needs a lot more diversity - especially ours.

Yes, my GPS can help them find the way to Russia. Gulags, Pravda and Siberia.

Nope. Mexicans are not eligible for the visa lottery program. About the only way Mexicans can get an immigrant visa is if they have an immediate family member who is a citizen or a legal permanent resident. Even then it can take a good fifteen years or more, if it happens at all, depending on the relationship to the citizen or legal permanent resident relative, the age and marital status of the person trying to get the visa, and so on. It’s complicated but the net result is that there is no legal path for most Mexicans to come here to live and most of those few who can come legally will have to jump through a lot of hoops and wait many years before they can come in with an immigrant visa.

First of all, why would they be applying here in the U.S.?

Second, congratulations on your command of the English answer which is a way of answering your question.

Why are they doing this in the U.S.? Why would an immigrant here already need help in a lottery to allow them to come here?

Never really got the point of the diversity visa. Seems like, if people from certain countries don;t want to immigrate here in the first place, what's the point of having the diversity visa for them?

Diversity Immigrant Visa

We should adopt Canada or Australia's immigration system. They use a point system based on a potential immigrant's skills, age, education and other factors to decide whether the immigrant would be a good addition to the country

we clearly have too many law schools if this is what they are doing to help.

(can we have referendums to CLOSE law schools? at least the state ones?)

The DIVERSITY lottery is not a “free pass”.

YOu still have to meet the green card qualifications.

(high school, no criminal record, never been a nazi during WW II, etc...)

Mexicans are the biggest group of illegal aliens
Mexicans are by far the largest group of legal immigrants. Was 300,000 per year last I looked. Many of these legal ones are impoverished. Many legal immigrants of all kinds are impoverished and will stay that way and so will their children. Vietnamese are one great exception. Poor Vietnamese and poor Chinese immigrants have raised very accomplished children here. But most other groups flop and their children don't amount to anything such as Somalians and Hmong

We should allow in only the skilled and English speakers. That's how Australia does it

We make it far too difficult for Europeans to immigrate but they were the ones who made America what it is. This is called self hatred and insanity

It's also not what I see as a reason to bring in new residents. We should look at what they bring to our country, and geography should be completely irrelevant to that decision.
