My View: California deserves a stimulus package (D-Karen Bass, California Assembly Speaker)
Sac Bee ^ | 11/22/08 | Karen Bass

During the Cold War, U.S. presidents paid close attention to the "domino theory" and to how having some country fall to communism on their watch would ultimately affect their place in history.

In his final weeks in office, President Bush has another set of dominoes to worry about – namely which financial giant will be the next to topple during his presidency.

To help in moving toward a national economic recovery – and to burnish his legacy by doing right in time of crisis – President Bush needs to step in now to help shore up one of the country's biggest economic dominoes: the state of California.

If the president were to look at California as a business, he'd see that it has 37 million shareholders, employs 18.5 million people, is responsible for producing more than $1.5 trillion annually and pays some $50 billion more in federal taxes than it gets back in services.

That's a record AIG, JP Morgan, Citigroup or any of the other financial institutions already receiving federal assistance couldn't hope to match.

California is not seeking the $700 billion that banks and financial services companies are poised to get. Or the $90 billion the three companies above have received.

But with California as vital as it is to the U.S. economy, the state requires the same kind of assistance given to other valuable institutions.

What California deserves is a federal stimulus package now that includes real economic assistance to states.

California has cut $15 billion from recent budgets.

--snip--

To address our budget problem in a way that does not harm the state's ability to contribute to national economic recovery, California needs to have any new state revenue at least matched by discretionary funds from the federal government.

The DEms want discretionary funds to bail-out there reckless spending and gubammint-expansionist ways. (guffaw)

If ya can cut 15 Billion, and no one is dying in the streets waiting for an ambulance or a bus or a cop, you can cut more.

Welcome to what California has become, a land of entitlements led by morons..

Liberals are inclined to spend on anything they want and the voters jump in too spending&borrowing even more... it is a Gordian knot... a death spiral.. only Hollywood would dare write such a script much less bring it to the screen.

You have got to be kidding! If California gets money, next all of the other states will want to have some. It would have been far cheaper to just take the bailout money and divide among the American citizens only with a condition they have to pay off their bills. Then anyone who wants to save a corporation can pull their resources with others. This has gone wild. There is not enough money to go around.

I got your stimulus package right here! And you aren’t going to like it Miss Bass!

We lived in Calif four times. We are happily back in Texas again! Calif has property tax plus state income tax, so they should be doing great with their double taxation. No amount of money is ever enough unless they CUT SPENDING!

Look at Texas, we have NO STATE INCOME TAX!

Dpoert the illegals who are working for cash under the table. Put tax paying Americans into their jobs.

That would help right there.

I like the linkage she makes between the domino theory of communism and the current financial crisis we are in.

A brief review of the history of how we got here reads like a list of accomplishments for the Dems with key assists by a few GoPers’ along the way.

FDR
Social Security
Medicare
Medicaid
CRA
Bail-outs for Everybody
(except the taxpayer)

Along the way, we may never really know how much have incumbent dems received in donations from quasi-gubamintal orgs and their minions and heads that were created by the US in the first place to serve a higher cause, and the common good and all.. which it Now turns out is actually nothing more than the furtherance of the cause of socialism and the eventual abandonment of the principles this nation was founded on, all done by those who game the system from within to tear it down.

I live in California.

California needs to stop spending money endlessly! They spend, spend, spend...

The idiots in Sacramento don't need to be bailed out from their extreme irresponsibility. They need to be held accountable and they need to start cutting spending - period.

The Scumocrats are slipping.

It wasn;t until the second line of this horsh!t that they got around to blaming President Bush for the meltdown caused by liberal Democrat fiscal insanity.

Inhofe said that 700 billion divided by 139 taxpaying families would come out to about $5,000 per family.

Give that money to families on the stipulation that they use it to create a business.

Let the dinosaurs die. Stop investing in athersclerotic dinosaurs and start investing in small, deft and nimble mammals for a change. We don't need megagiants that "we can't afford to let fail." We need small businesses that may fail but most would probably survive.
