As Bush's Term Ends, Some Big Names Seek Pardons
The WaPo ^ | Carrie Johnson | Nov 24, 2008

With a backlog of applications piled up at the Justice Department, high-profile criminals and their well-connected lawyers increasingly are appealing directly to President Bush for special consideration on pardons and clemency, according to people involved in the process.

Among those seeking presidential action are former junk-bond salesman Michael Milken, who hired former solicitor general Theodore B. Olson, one of the nation's most prominent GOP lawyers, to plead his case for a pardon on 1980s-era securities fraud charges. Two politicians convicted of public corruption, former congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-Calif.) and four-term Louisiana governor Edwin W. Edwards (D), are asking Bush to shorten their prison terms.

Any other members of the Weather Underground or any other terrorist groups? They got pardons under Clinton.

As far as I’m concerned, the only one who should get a pardon is Scooter Libby. Edwards should rot in jail.

Duke Cunningham has served 2.5 years. He’s disgraced and has lost his House seat.I think he should be released from prison but not necessarily be given a full “pardon”.The two border guards should get full pardons. As for Milken and Edwards...I say they should go bleep themselves.

I think there's about a ten percent chance he will. But, mostly Bush thinks he's rewarding Sutton for his "loyalty".

This will haunt Bush even if he does pardon them. It should, too. Bush should go to his grave feeling guilty about this.

Absolutely not. The only reason this two-term crook got re-elected AFTER being convicted (and then he "crooked" some more) was because a significant number of Democrats voted for David Duke in the GOP primary in Louisiana. And the Republicans made it clear to vote against Duke in the general election.

Duke was a Democrat and then an independent and then he ran as a Republican and became "famous" for being a racist "Republican" and then went back to being an independent.

But he did his job for the Democrats.

Duke Cunningham undermined our country and the progress of the conservative cause. He does not deserve a pardon. He’s one of the reasons we now have a RAT majority and an evil egomaniac as President-elect.

No way, both men should leave prison in a pine box.

They are free to do it at any time. Too many of them “load up on pardons” just before they leave office. So they don’t face political blowback.

If the pardons were justified in the first place, there would be no shame in releasing these convicts and there would be every reason to see that someone who was wrongfully or overreachingly convicted is turned loose in a timely manner, NOT having to wait until January of the final month of service of a President.

The Iranian nutjob did the same thing with the captured British, remember when he pardoned them before his show trial had even begun?

The only crime Michael Milkin committed was challenging the bankster establishment - his savings and loans challenged the power of the charterd banks.
