Deccan Mujahideen email threatens Delhi

NEW DELHI: Three-wheeler autos in the capital have come under the security scanner after the terror siege of Mumbai. According to highly placed government sources, there are intelligence inputs on the possible use of autos for triggering a blast in a crowded area of Delhi.

The Intelligence Bureau has also sounded a fresh alert to Delhi Police asking them to step up security at vital installations in the capital after an email, which police sources said was signed by the "Deccan Mujahideen", warned of a repeat of the Mumbai terror attack at Indira Gandhi International Airport and the three major railway stations.

Acting on the three-wheeler threat, police are conducting random checks on autos, particularly around the airport. During the last serial blasts in Delhi, a bomb had gone off in an auto at Ghaffar Market in Karol Bagh. At that time too there had been intelligence alerts on the possibility of key installations in Delhi coming under threat from autos.

Experts say, since three-wheelers run on CNG, an 'auto bomb' is likely to cause more damage than an explosion in a petrol or diesel vehicle.

"The information said that explosives in an auto were likely to be planted and set off in a crowded area. After that, the airport has been checking on idle autos and those which enter the premises without passengers. The threat still holds and checking has been intensified," said a government source.

Remember the car bomb that almost went off in central London last year, near Piccadilly Circus? It could have killed hundreds of people.

The one thing they are proficient at is racking up the body count. The only response to terrorists is to exterminate then. Don't capture them - just kill them. There's a great deal of truth to the truism "the only good terrorist is a dead terrorist." For a dead terrorist can't come back to perpetrate future mayhem.

I doubt this -- assuming they're talking about the autorickshaws, which are quite small. (The other three-wheeled vehicles I've seen there are trucks.)

I have seen fire dept. Training films showing the results of a CNG vehicle explosion. If the safety features fail (or are tampered with) they can produce a very potent explosion. It is a concern due to the increase of CNG vehicle being used here. If you come across an accident and one of the vehicles has the telltale blue diamond/CNG sticker on it, be very cautious. Gas from a damaged tank can easily be ignited.

Interesting. I believe these are the vehicles in mention:

Very small, and little room for tanks (the engine and everything are under the backseat bench) -- but a description of the 9/13 bombings noted that a low-intensity bomb detonated the tank in one of these throwing it several feet into the air or up into the phone lines depending on the story. (Or possibly the phone lines were only a few feet up.) Photos show that one of these had blown up.
