Political newcomer Anh "Joseph" Cao, a Republican, holds an early lead over nine-term incumbent William Jefferson, a Democrat, in the 2nd Congressional District.
With 139 of 492 precincts reporting around 9:15 p.m., Cao, a Venetian Isles attorney who has enjoyed strong backing from local and national GOP organizations, is leading 58 percent to 39 percent over Jefferson. Green Party candidate Malik Rahim has 2 percent, while Libertarian Gregory Kahn is trailing with 1 percent.
The district, which was drawn to give African Americans an electoral advantage, covers most of New Orleans, most of Jefferson Parish's West Bank and parts of south Kenner. About two-thirds of the district's voters are registered as Democrats.

A nice bit of news.
Holy Cao Batman - PLEASE let it HOLD!!!
Wonder why Wm didn’t just get some of his stash out of his freezer and have ACORN buy him some votes?
A crooked Democrat receives votes from his base. It tells you something about the character of their voters.
This one is amazing so far. I don’t expect it to hold up, but that it’s happening at all says much about Jefferson fatigue.
Cao, while ahead, still has to contend with a huge number of Democrat precincts left to report.
It’s neat to see he lives in Venetian Isles. Venetian Isles is mostly professional people who want to live in New Orleans but don’t want to live “in” New Orleans. I’d figure it has the largest per capita number of cops living there because of the old residency law. It’s just outside of Michoud which is stacked to the brim with Vietnamese. So much so they have a lot of businesses with bilingual signs. They even named some of the streets with Vietnamese names. It was the least affected area after Katrina in New Orleans East.
I really don't think Venice is in the district. And while there are a lot of "Isles" in the bays...there are none in the channel (where Venice is).
Or, perhaps, what we have here is a crack journalist for the Times-Picayune who is geographically-challenged...and blissfully unaware of Viet Nam.
Unfortunately, she’s not doing as well in Orleans parish, and that’s where the most votes are outstanding.
A Republican getting 40% in this district would be a miracle. Getting 50% would cause the earth to spin off its axis into the sun.
Jefferson’s blatant corruption (if he were a Republican, he’d have been in jail long ago) only serves to endear him to his racist constituency.
I wish Mr. Cao all the best, and it’s fun having a momentary lead, but he hasn’t got a prayer in this district.
Thanks for the clarification. And I'll withdraw my snarky comment about the reporter.
Venetian Isles is a geographic subset of New Orleans. It’s located along Lake Ponchartrain south of Lake Catherine and is mostly 2-3 story houses with the 1st floor being garage/workshop due to the “wet” location. Also there are slips built on most properties for lake access.
That pretty much describes all Dem voters. There never was an ethic challenged politician they didn't like.
U. S. Representative, 2nd Congressional District
265 of 492 precincts reporting
William J. Jefferson, D - 15,280 43.21%
Malik Rahim, G - 1,043 2.95%
Gregory W. Kahn, L - 307 .87%
Anh “Joseph” Cao, R - 18,733 52.97%
Thanks.
3/4ths of Jefferson is in, half of Orleans.
No problem. check out the area on Google Maps if you want though. It still seems like their streetview caught it in recovery mode though.

According to a brief bio on FOX, Cao is an immigration attorney strongly supporting amnesty. We seem to be mired in rank choices, don't we? Still, we can hope the GOP House members can see future losses on the proverbial wall if they support amnesty next year, making the chances of it passing in these economic times weak.
I'd still rather have Cao than a known crook like Jefferson!
