At least 300 girls in south-western Kenya have fled from home and sought refuge in churches in a bid to escape forced female genital mutilation (FGM).
The girls, some as young as nine, are at two rescue centres in rural Nyanza province, police told the BBC.
Female circumcision is banned in Kenya, but remains common in some areas where it is considered to be part of a girl's initiation into womanhood.
The traditional ceremonies take place between November and December.
Security
The girls in Kuria District are now in the care of the two churches and Maendeleo Ya Wanawake, a women's organisation.
Police are providing security at the centres to ensure that the girls are not forcibly removed or harassed.
Beatrice Robi, Maendeleo Ya Wanawake's district chairperson and a gender activist, says that at least 200 girls are undergoing circumcision in the district a day.
She said she had found a seven-year-old girl who had just been circumcised.
"There are more girls who are still in their homes and they are undergoing it [circumcision], whether it is voluntarily or they are being forced," she told the BBC.
She says her organisation along with the local churches and authorities have been trying to convince the community to stop the practice and rescuing girls from forced circumcision.
Paul Wanjama, the commanding officer in Kuria District, says girls in the region usually flee to the rescue centres until the season ends.
He said that in some cases, parents encourage the girls to go to the rescue centres to avoid being circumcised.
"There are some parents who are against that [FGM practice] but they get pressure from these traditional people," he told the BBC.

Aren’t we talking about more than circumcision for these girls?
It was my understanding that the girls would be left unable to enjoy future sexual relations, something that the men thought would make them more faithful.
Am I understanding this practice for what it is? It’s actually closer to mutilation than the conventional practice for male children, isn’t it?
What is the Obama tribe’s position on this??
They cut off the clitoris, leaving the girl unable to enjoy sex very much. Some places, they also sew the vagina shut, so that her husband has to cut her open on her wedding night. Does not make for a fun wedding night on the girl's part.
Run girls. Now THIS is a charity I could get involved in with regards to Kenya.
It’s such a horrific thing, I haven’t even explained this atrocity of Islam to my daughters. They just learned the other day that women still get stoned over in Muslim countries after learning about stoning in church.

When I read Ayan Hirsi Ali’s personal account of her own “genital mutilation” (circumcision my “butt”), I literally had to cross my legs just thinking about it....
The procedure is often done by some village schmo who uses jagged glass; infections are most common. When he cuts off the clitoris, he then stitches up the girl so that the opening is very, very small; just large enough to allow the passage of urine and menstrual blood.
In one passage, Ayan discusses how some Muslim women are in a bathroom and a girl who has not had the genital mutilation is peeing and one can hear the loud stream. They make nasty remarks out loud to each other such as, “Listen to her, she pees like a horse.” They try to turn what is normal into something perverse.
It is, without a doubt, one of the most diabolical procedures I have ever read about and is still practiced widely in some parts of the Muslim (African and Middle East) world. The women are scarred, often to the point of debilitation. Sex is painful and there is often no sexual pleasure or very minimal; though not always (amazingly).
I have deep passion about this subject and when I am through with my university studies, I plan to work towards having this practice abolished.

It was good that you posted that video on here. People need to be enlightened. There is much ignorance in this world about these diabolical practices.
I shudder. I know what occurs - have read several first hand accounts in numerous books. However, while watching this video, I had to cry out to God again for mercy on humankind.
So why the Karl Marx quote at the beginning? Are we to think good ole marx will prevent that from happening?
