JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israel can no longer expect "blank cheques" from Washington once president-elect Barack Obama's administration takes over in January, a former US ambassador to the Jewish state said on Sunday.

"The era of the blank cheque is over," said Martin Indyk, director of the Centre for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institute who is considered close to incoming secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

"The Obama administration intends to be engaged, using diplomacy to try to bring about a safer and more peaceful place, that is different from the seven years of the (George W.) Bush administration," he said on public radio.

I can guarentee that Israel will no longer be an ally to the United States. Obama’s support is for the Muslim World, he says so in his book so for all the Jews that voted for Obama, you get what you pay for

All Israel has to do is fail once. Let’s hope ‘the One’ isn’t intent on seeing that happen.

Even our side has been harder and harder on Israel. That sends a green light to folks who hate the nation. When you fail to defend your allies loudly, this is what happens when the other side takes over. They get bolder.

Trashing Israel for every step it took to defend itself was woefully stupid.

Those ghetto idiots who voted for this guy have no idea the repercussions of turning our backs on the only ally we've got in the middle east.

Israel has been a good friend to us in a part of the world where we are generally despised, even by our so called friends.

"The Obama administration intends to be engaged, using diplomacy to try to bring about a safer and more peaceful place,...

That worked real well under Clinton (sarc)

I am just finishing reading Epicentre by Joel Rosenberg. Sadly, Obama being the President dovetails with the timeline of the book’s predictions.

What Obama's stiffing of Israel will get is Benjamin Netenyahu as Israeli Prime Minister....a man that knows Israel is the only nation willing to fight for Israel.

He will make Obama look like the fool he is.

And it is our loss.

Why on earth would any Jewish person in the USA vote for that guy....?

I hope they’re satisfied, now that it looks like they might have DESTROYED THE STATE OF ISRAEL...

You know what I heard about police procedure on calls about impending suicides...? They often end up shooting the guy —I mean shooting him even before he does any shooting at all of his own.

The attitude is that he’s in a special state of mind where he doesn’t connect actions with consequences, and life seems suddenly cheap.

How is this different from what US Jews just did —something like 80% of them.

Is the point at which they earn absolution from....SOMETHING...also the point at which THEY ALL DIE..?

If they all want to jump off a bridge, do I, too, have to jump off the bridge? Cuz ya see, that’s REALLY UNHEALTHY, OK....?

Israel does not DESERVE blank cheques from the US. They are only a co-belligerent in this terror stuff. They are not our friend. Do freepers understand that nations have no enduring alliances, only enduring interests? Nations sure as heck don’t have friends.

Honestly, in terms of actually FIXING problems, Israel used to be tremendously effective. The 1967 and 1973 wars, the bombing of the iraqi reactor - where is that country now?

What I do find troubling is how the new president intends to approach the major global problem of the rise of radical islam. I am aware of no specific opinion at all from the guy.
