Porter empathizes with Burress, defends athletes' need for guns

Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter had plenty to say when asked about New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress' latest troubles, and Porter can speak from experience.

...

"For a person to carry a gun, I mean, you're not carrying a gun to show that 'I'm tough.' It's safety, it's nothing but safety," Porter said.

...

"When you get out of a situation like that and you've been in harm's way, the first thing that goes through your mind, I'd rather get caught and take the little penalty from the media, whatever the situation may be, than not have a chance to save my life," Porter said.

...

"I mean, you look at Sean Taylor, he was trying to go by the rules of not having a gun because he got in trouble earlier that year with the gun. Something as simple as that, he gets a home invasion and he gets killed over something simple."

I must say...I agree with most of what he has to say in this interview.

Safety? Plaxico shot himself in the leg. What happened Joey? Did Plaxico's leg threaten him?

I agree with the underlying ideas but the fact is, laws are laws and disobeying them, even for the noblest of reasons, means you’ll go before a judge. If he’s to receive leniency on the “potential self defense” argument, it will be there.

Assuming that all laws are followed (of course), then everything he says makes sense.

I agree with you, as unfair as some laws may seem, "laws are still laws." It's best to just be responsible and follow them.

The only flaw in his rationale is the notion that celebrities deserve the right to protect themselves. WE ALL DESERVE THAT RIGHT.

Has anyone heard any details on just how Plax shot himself? Did something happen in the club that spooked him and caused him to disengage the safety? Do we have any story at all on the mechanics of the shooting?

Disgree.

The only problem I see with Burress is if he had ‘permission’ by the night club[private property] to have the gun.

The NYC anti-gun laws are the problem, not Burress.

You shouldn't need a dam permit or license to exercise your rights. NYC can go to hell, this is only the criminalization of America.

Joey Porter and Plaxico belong in the T.O., Pacman, Oco Cinco, A-hole hall of fame. The Steelers let Porter and Plaxico go, not because of money, but because they were problems.

Oh please.

The average NFL salary is over $500,000. Have a bodyguard on retainer.

Found this:

Burress, 31, was allegedly inside the hot spot with teammate Antonio Pierce when they were confronted by security guards looking for weapons, sources said.

The Super Bowl hero, who nabbed the game-winning catch in the Giants' monumental win over the Patriots in February, admitted to the guards that he was packing heat, sources said.

After moving to a secluded area with a guard, he allegedly took the gun out and started to unload the bullets while drinking a glass of wine.

But the sure-handed wideout began to bobble the firearm, accidentally firing a shot that ripped through his leg but missed the bone.

Gotta love NY Post reporting...

Agreed. I still wonder what the full story was about Porter getting shot in the butt in Denver. The Pittsburgh media wanted it to look like he had nothign to do with it, and he was simply a target. That man’s mouth has gotten him nowhere so I hardly believe that.

I’m with you, even though I think Burress is a pathetic excuse for human being.

A few years ago, Joey Porter was shot while standing in a parking lot in Colorado. I’d guess that colors his opinions about safety.

Joey is clueless. Burress has an offseason home in the town I live in. He has a gate and our small town police force is great. They will have a car at your house in about 2 minutes or less. He will not have a home invasion there. If he has a house in a nice area of Jersey during the season then he will be safe there as well.

If these guys go home & avoid clubbing at night, avoid hanging with homeys then they are relatively safe. If you go clubbing late and night or hang in the hood you are going to have problems or be exposed to crime. Very little good happens after midnight when you are out and about.

Buress needs to take a gun safety class and probably should not own a gun.

Firstly, Plaxico was in a joint that had a metal detector at the door and strong security. He was in no danger. Secondly, Joey Porter was in a part of town known to be dangerous. Joey wouldn't have been shot at the opera.

Thx for posting, I hadn’t seen that. It’s at odds with the earliest story that came out, which said he was “fiddling with his waistband” and there was “a pop.”

If the place you are going is THAT dangerous, take security or don’t go.

That is pretty much the advice given by the NFL commish.

That’s exactly why I wonder they made it seem like Porter was simply a victim. He’s nothing but a well paid thug, so he probably was chomping at the bit to sh*t talk someone at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The NFL is full of idiots and thugs.

Just because you may be a professional athlete or any other profession you should not have to go through life unarmed.
Just because you may go to N.Y. or Maryland or New Jersey or some other state you should not have to be unarmed.
I’ve seen to cops in N.Y. and they can not protect ya.
