Sadly for the writer, he is a bit confused. He constantly mentions the twin pillars of human rights as “equality and liberty.” Those things are mutally exclusive. Equality might exist at birth, but after that moment, even in the best of all worlds, people differ in temperament, desire, intelligence, character, and personality. Places that have focused on equality as their foundation eventually create a totalitarian state, since no other force can create the artificial state of “equality” between naturally unequal people.

Of course, we can try to make sure that some measures of inequality are placed off limits for moral and ethical reasons. Creating different circumstances based on race, sex, and ethnic background are crude and bigoted. However, you can’t demand “equality” without have some kind of enforcement mechanism to create it.

Liberty, on the other hand, leads naturally to an unequal outcome. If all of us have the ability to do what we would like, constrained only by moral and ethical restraints, some will work hard and others not so hard, and in the end, there will be winners and losers. The good news is that neither winner nor loser has that position perpetually, and people can earn what is theirs.

My two cents.
