Japan's cheap hand-me-down cars have flooded Bolivia's narrow streets, where empty cabs honk pleadingly for fares and lines at gas stations often stretch down the block.
Now President Evo Morales has announced a ban on all imports of cars more than five years old, hoping to call time-out on an automotive binge that has given South America's poorest country a crash course in the joy, pain and traffic of car culture.

The cheaper, more durable vehicles have spawned a cutthroat public transport market now gobbling up streets once ruled by stately Dodge buses and a handful of private new cars for the rich. The author is a commie moron....any other questions?

There's this guy I know who takes over payments on repoed large SUVs then exports them to Bolivia for a profit.
For a variety of reasons no one ever thought to send such vehicles to that country yet they are perfectly pre-adapted to local conditions.
I don't think he ever sent anything there five or more years old ~ most of them look pretty new.

Enlighten me.....wise one. There is nothing in the article to indicate the author is a commie or a moron. It's a news article and one I thought amusing.

Yes, sound like good capitalists, or commies. Take you pick. And I find nothing "amusing" about the article.....the Gov has told the peasants they can't buy cheap, well made cars from Japan. Cars are for the rich.....

I'll bet they just don't have room for all the cars.

The reason why there are so many cheap Japanese used cars more than 5 years old is that the Japanese require a very expensive inspection every 2 years called
"shaken" that gets increasingly more expensive to pass as a car gets older, to the point that paying the shaken fees cost more than the car is worth and people buy new cars.
