All over Latin America for the last two days the newspapers are featuring stories of the Birth. But in Caracas early on Christmas eve there was this story and today, Christmas Day, there is an interview with the Cardinal there warning of the danger of a lifetime presidency.

Francisco de Miranda, the "John the Baptist of Venezuela," came here and met and knew our founders, observed common law trials and admired them for their getting at the truth.

After a temporary success he surrendered and died in Spanish hands. The great Bolivar succeeded him and, among other things, convened a meeting in what is now Panama to try and create a United States of Latin America. They both wanted to be part of a Republic to be like us.

Now Chavez, who gives speeches castigating the Judeo-Euro North (us), has declared himself a Maoist, and believes in an Indio fascism in which Indios are Chinese, perverts the name of Bolivar and lies to his people.

This may well be the first real test for the One and he does not have a clue; nor can we rely on his Secretary of State.

All Venezualans living outside their country may register with officials where they are and vote in this referendum. We should all encourage anyone we know who is Venezuelan to vote against a lifetime presidency for Chavez.

The strategic importance of this, the oldest republic modeled after our own, cannot be overestimated. Our research shows that the mineable oil formations of Alberta, after coming down through this country and resurface, after going underwater, in South America.

There is enough oil in this hemisphere that can be burned cleanly for hundreds of years. We cannot let this man be a dictator with control of a significant portion of it against the common sense and desires of most Venezuelans and in alliance with Castro, Ahmadinajab and Communist China and Putin. He has already ruined the rest of Venezuela's economy for the time being and done great harm to its oil business. He hates us with a blind hatrad, unlike Bolivar, whom he falsely claims to follow as an exemplar.

And this surprises — who?

That Chavez will suspend the Venezuelan Constitution and declare a state of emergency if they do not elect him lifetime president is a foregone conclusion. He is already a dictator — as surely as Castro is, and his Bolivian protege wants to be.

Yes, but the resistance to him, by comparison, is surprisingly deep and widespread, as the many articles show. So he may not be able to pull it off with the price of oil so low. This article was printed in many Venezuelan papers and today the Archbishop in Caracas came out very strongly against his amendment to be president for life. I suspect the Holy Father may be acting somewhat like his predecessor on this front and there is a strong disaffected business community and a large middle class.
