Last week I was in the Middle East. I was meeting with renowned Muslim scholars, men who lead millions, in a move to condemn extremism and violence. We at the Quilliam Foundation made huge headway, with a high-profile regional event planned next year to help reshape the discourse surrounding Islam and the west.
At home in England, behind the scenes, Muslim leaders were also moving in the same direction. The air was becoming ripe for outright rejection of suicide bombings. Everywhere. Tel Aviv. London. No exceptions.
But now? After Israel's massacre of innocent Palestinians in Gaza, out on the streets of Cairo and Damascus it would be impossible to find credible voices that condemn suicide bombings in Israel. Thanks to its ruthless air strikes and economic blockade of Gaza, Hamas is stronger today than it was last week. Friday sermons across the Muslim world this week will see the worst condemnation of Israel, rightful support for the bealeagured Palestinian peoples – and a boost to the popularity of Hamas by default.
Regardless of political condemnations, the crude reality is that Israel has just helped create a new generation of suicide bombers, prepared to stop at nothing. The ideology that justifies and advocates suicide bombings already exists. Israel though, through its recent actions, has just provided the fire that will now re-ignite this poisoned gas. Prevented for now by Israel's wall and heavy security, the suicide bombers' will to kill, to avenge will not calm. And where there is a will, victims will always find a way to lash out.
I have lived next to a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus, Syria. I've sat in homes of poor, hospitable Palestinians who_still yearn to return to their homeland, taken by force from them in the turmoil after Britain hurriedly_left Palestine in 1948.

Is this moron Bahgdad Bob’s cousin? There is only one thing that will stop suicide bombings....a total nuke of Mecca, and every other Islamic holy city when all the Muslims are gathered in one spot. Then a total destruction of every Arab country in the world and the peoplle in it.
Ed Husain is his name, does anything else need to be said? He makes it appear as though he was for Israel, but has now changed his mind. What a joke. If you want Palestine to have their own land then cough it up from one of the other Arab countries that have plenty of it.

In that case Israel needs to just completely clear the Gaza of all arabs and consider it a pre-emptive strike.
Since my years in Britain, the Guardian has sunk from incredibly dense to unimaginably obtuse.
Methinks we should go ahead and send the majority of our lib arts grads to the UK where they can join those to whom simple logic is a post graduate course.
Imagine if the Israelis started lobbing rockets into Gaza like that.
I love how the Arabs are calling this a massacre or even a genocide. If the IDF really wanted to massacre the people in Gaza, I think there would be more than a few hundred dead. Even the Arabs and their apologists admit that most of the casualties are HAMAS militants and operatives.
Gaza is a pus-pocket that needs to be drained every now and then. I strongly recommend against any re-occupation and don’t think it is likely. HAMAS obviously needs to be kept busy, so that is what’s happening.
They don’t negotiate in good faith. Those who are calling for another truce know full well that HAMAS will violate it. They expect Israel to take and take and take these attacks with no response.

If the left wants Israel to stop bombing the simple solution is to get Hamas to stop firing rockets into their country. It’s really that simple but for some reason the left never seem to mention it.
If the drug cartels in Tijuana started lobbing rockets into San Diego we would respond the same way.
