BAGHDAD Maj. Gen. Jorge Molina, El Salvadoran Minister of Defense, traveled to Iraq earlier this month to meet with Dr. Mowaffak al-Rubaie, Iraqi National Security Advisor; Mr. Michael Corbin, Senior Political-Military Ministerial Counselor, U.S. Embassy - Iraq; Rear Adm. David Buss, Chief of Strategy, Plans and Assessments for Multi-National Forces Iraq; and his own Salvadoran forces deployed here.
The Ministers meetings with U.S. Embassy and MNF-I officials focused on gaining perspectives of the Coalition forces mission in Iraq.
Molina met with Rubaie to discuss the preliminary invitation letter from the Government of Iraq to the Government of El Salvador to continue to provide non-combat forces to assist Iraqi Security Forces after Dec. 31 of this year.
Molina also traveled to Forward Operating Base Delta, near Kut, to visit Salvadoran troops and learn about the work being done by the Cuscatlán Battalion.
The bad news is, it looks like the FMLN are about to win the presidential elections in El Salvador for the first time. So the El Salvadoran troops will probably be leaving Iraq with or without an invitation to stay.
Cuscatlán is in the really nice part of San Salvador. If I’m not mistaken think this outfit’s barracks are right near the presidential palace may be the palace guard unit.
