When Harry Met Blago
IBD Editorials ^ | January 5, 2009

Politics: Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich may have played the race card in a cynical attempt to save his political skin, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and others are no less cynical or offensive in their actions.

The controversy over Blago's appointment of renowned empty suit and former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to fill Barack Obama's vacant U.S. Senate seat could have been avoided had Illinois Democrats obeyed their initial impulse and passed legislation calling for a special election.

Illinois' senior senator, Dick Durbin, among others, was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the idea, but now is among those calling for Blagojevich to resign so Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn can appoint Obama's replacement.

Seems it dawned on party leaders that the Democrat brand might be so tarnished that a (gasp) Republican might win, campaigning oddly enough against a Democratic "culture of corruption."

Maintaining Democratic control of Obama's seat is paramount for Democrats who are so close to a filibuster-proof majority. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said the Senate would absolutely refuse to seat anyone appointed by Blagojevich.

But it wasn't that long ago that Reid was offering Blago interesting suggestions on just whom to pick.

Is the D-rat party turning our wonderful country into another Nigeria? It makes me sick to think of it.

Quite true. The D-controlled IL state legislature didn’t pursue the special election because they feared there might be enough anti-Blago sentiment that a Republican might actually have a chance of winning. Now, best case, they’re stuck with a black get-along guy who will be marginally electable when he has to run to keep the seat.

Seems that Harry isn’t the only one with some splainin to do. Judicial watch got some of Zero’s letters through the FOIA act.

That’s why Dusty Harry clammed up on MTP Sunday, because he knew damned well that he had to watch what he was saying, because he knew damned well that the Federal Prosecutor had him on tape.

I don't know. I think it's an increase in "gravitas."

This is why everyone wants Blago to resign. If he goes quietly, a lot of people don’t get exposed.

Trouble is, Blago isn’t playing their game anymore.

Pass the popcorn.

It’s because they are not accountable. And they know it. Imagine being able to walk into a bank, rob it, kill everyone, be caught on camera and laughing while the jury views the tape and says, “it was taken out of context. Innocent”

I think popcorn sales are going to prove to be the only stimulus the Country really needs...

I think Obama and the Democrats are turning our country into another Zimbabwe. Marxist Robert Mugabe is a favorite of the Clinton Administration and longtime Obama backer Louis Farrakhan. The Obama thugs are out to bleed America dry.
