CA: (terrorist) Bill Ayers: Trudging Toward Freedom (St Mary's College, we'll be there!)
Saint Mary's - Moraga, CA ^ | January 28, 2009 | Press Release

Posted on 01/26/2009 1:33:12 PM PST by Jim Robinson

"Guilty as hell, free as a bird—America is a great country," he said. Chicago Magazine, No Regrets, Aug 2001.
Bill Ayers: Trudging Toward Freedom

Bill Ayers, a professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago, became a focal point of the 2008 presidential campaign. Described by Republican nominee John McCain as “a washed up terrorist,” Ayers was a prominent figure with Students for a Democratic Society and the Weather Underground in the late 1960s and 1970s.

After spending several years living underground as the U.S. government pursued charges against him that it later dropped, Ayers went on to become one of the nation’s leading voices on education reform. He will speak to Saint Mary’s students about his new book, Teaching toward Freedom: Moral Commitment and Ethical Action in the Classroom. Sponsored by Jan Term, the Social Justice Speaker Series and the Disney Forum.

When: Wed., Jan. 28 7:30 p.m.

Where: Soda Center, Saint Mary's College, 1928 Saint Mary's Rd., Moraga

Contact: Director of Scheduling and Promotion Bill Sullivan (925) 631-4322

Chicago Magazine, Aug 2001, NO REGRETS!

From our August 2001 issue: "Kill your parents!" urged sixties leftist Bill Ayers, whose father was the chairman of Commonwealth Edison here. In Ayers's new memoir, Fugitive Days, he reconciles his militant past with his present identity: father of three, esteemed professor at UIC—and unabashed patron of the great bourgeois coffee chain, Starbucks

Dear Bro. This decision is going to cost St. Mary’s a lot of money. The January Term committee in their arrogance showed no regard for the community you take up space in. Your arrogance is a bit much as well.

E-newsletter for Saint Mary’s College of California: Jan. 21, 2009

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

*GOP*Dear Members of the Saint Mary’s College Community,

You’ve likely heard that some members of our College community and some beyond are concerned with the decision to invite Professor William Ayers to campus as part of the January Term speaker series for this year’s theme of Against the Grain. I’m writing to clarify the circumstances regarding Professor Ayers selection, to share the College’s official position on the matter and to provide additional information regarding his visit.

Professor Ayers was selected by the January Term committee, a group composed primarily of faculty members, to speak about “Trudging Toward Freedom: Building a Movement and Living Our Lives for Peace and Justice.” Professor Ayer’s selection in no way constitutes an endorsement by the College of any past actions, viewpoints or political opinions. Nor is his invitation an attempt on the part of the College to honor him in any way.

Some have called on me or the College to rescind or overrule the January Term leadership’s invitation to Professor Ayers. To do so would be to undermine the educational principles and values upon which our College is based. Institutions of higher education serve society and their local communities by providing a place for opinions and ideas of all types to be examined, questioned and discussed. It is in these “academic cities” that the arts of reason and of inquiry, the fruits of the liberal arts, are brought to bear on the controversial issues of today and of all time. For students, faculty members and the public, colleges provide a special opportunity to step away from the often overheated and polarized rhetoric of contemporary culture and examine difficult and controversial issues in the somewhat cooler light of reason.

As a College with a Great Books tradition, we have a responsibility to defend the rights of those with controversial viewpoints to speak. To live up to our great tradition, we must remain an academic community where the free and open discussion of ideas, even those with which we strongly disagree, is possible.

Let me be clear, I strongly disagree with many of Professor Ayers past actions, statements and viewpoints; nevertheless, I support the January Term Committee’s right to invite him to the College, and will insist that he is treated with the respect and courtesy all of our invited academic speakers deserve. Professor Ayers has indicated that he will take questions after his address. I am certain that our students, faculty and staff members will raise probing, difficult and thoughtful questions.

While I regret that some are disappointed in the January Term’s decision to invite Professor Ayers, I am aware of the provocative conversation that the announcement of his talk has already engendered and anticipate the vigorous discourse that his remarks and visit are likely to elicit. Those who wish to protest Professor Ayers presence on campus will be given the opportunity, within reasonable limits, to do so as long as their activities do not interfere with or harm the academic work of the college or the access of students and faculty to Professor Ayers’s address.

I am also grateful for the input and engagement by many of our College constituents in this issue. Offering a forum for an exchange of diverse opinions is essential to fulfilling our mission. We are a community committed to conversations focused on essential questions, which ignite a lifelong passion for learning.

Sincerely,
Brother Ronald Gallagher, FSC
President

I need a little help with something. I had lunch today with someone who said that Obama did not launch his political career in Ayers’ living room. Where does that info come from? If it’s true that he did, I’d like to send her the proof. She also didn’t believe that that top 1% of wage earners pay 40% of all the taxes. The data to support that was pretty easy to find...I’m not sure about the Ayers thing, though.

They invite people with controversial viewpoints! Hurrah!

Our recent election, and blatant campus leftism, prove that Ayers and his ilk are the new mainstream. If they really want someone controversial, how about Rush...or our own dear Jim Robinson. THAT would be controversial.

Obama once visited ‘60s radicals

(excerpt)

In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district’s influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

While Ayers and Dohrn may be thought of in Hyde Park as local activists, they’re better known nationally as two of the most notorious — and unrepentant — figures from the violent fringe of the 1960s anti-war movement.

Now, as Obama runs for president, what two guests recall as an unremarkable gathering on the road to a minor elected office stands as a symbol of how swiftly he has risen from a man in the Hyde Park left to one closing in fast on the Democratic nomination for president.

“I can remember being one of a small group of people who came to Bill Ayers’ house to learn that Alice Palmer was stepping down from the senate and running for Congress,” said Dr. Quentin Young, a prominent Chicago physician and advocate for single-payer health care, of the informal gathering at the home of Ayers and his wife, Dohrn. “[Palmer] identified [Obama] as her successor.”

Obama and Palmer “were both there,” he said.

Obama’s connections to Ayers and Dorhn have been noted in some fleeting news coverage in the past. But the visit by Obama to their home — part of a campaign courtship — reflects more extensive interaction than has been previously reported.

Would Brother Gallagher invite neo-NAZI or anti-Muslim or anti-Homosexualist speakers, in the interest of presenting different viewpoints? No? Why not? Because “controversial” viewpoints must still be politically correct, that’s why. Which renders them uncontroversial.

Many liberal news media sources and "fight the smears" denied President Obama launched his career at Bill Ayer's house. There are some news stories saying he did and some saying he didn't.

However, count on dumb ol' "Professor" Bill Ayers to not be able to keep a secret. According to the Chicago Sun-Times after the election Bill Ayers updated his book's afterword to a statement about Obama: "We had served together on the board of a foundation, knew one another as neighbors and family friends, held an initial fund-raiser at my house, where I’d made a small donation to his earliest political campaign,” he writes.

Note: read the current top two comments of the Sun-Times article - funny.

Article: Obama's Foul Weather Friends
By Scott Swett and Roger Canfield

"As a gesture of solidarity, the Vietnamese who [Bernardine] Dohrn met in Budapest presented her with a ring made from an American aircraft shot down over North Vietnam. Bill Ayers would receive a similar ring while meeting with Vietnamese communists in Toronto. He later recalled being so moved by the gesture that he 'left the room to cry.' He said, 'I realized...America was an evil... and that I was... living inside the belly of the beast...' "

Update from Melanie Morgan's Website:

Conservative Protest Against Domestic Terrorist Begins Wednesday!
Written by Melanie Morgan
Monday, 26 January 2009

A late afternoon meeting between St. Mary's College officials in Moraga, Calif. resulted in a negotiated access settlement, but no "diss-invitation" of sixties radical underground former Weatherman Bill Ayers.

"Simple Justice, Not Social Justice" coalition consisting of Move America Forward, Contra Costa County Republicans,Patriot Guard Riders, San Francisco College Republicans, KSFO radio listeners and St. Mary's students and alumn are preparing for a sixties style teach-in during the day on the secluded East Bay campus.

Larry Grathwohl, a former FBI informant who penetrated the Weather Underground at the time the group attempted three mass murders, will try to confront domestic terrorist (and Obama family friend) Bill Ayers at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, CA on January 28.

Grathwohl will be a featured speaker at a protest against Ayers organized by Move America Forward.Ayers is presently on a book tour promoting a book on "social justice" that more than likely skips over how must justice can be found in the elimination of 25 million in concentration camps once hoped for by the leadership of the Weather Underground.

The protest rally begins at 6:00 in the evening, but protestors are encouraged to come earlier for TV live shots.

The university is not reversing course despite intense lobbying by thousands of citizens from across the Bay, and around the country.

The coalition is pleased to announce, however, that we will have unfettered access to the front of the Soda Center where Bill Ayers will be speaking 48 hours from now.

Bring your flags, signs, kids, grandma and grandpa - wear your love of our great country for everyone to see!

Go to our protest website for details, maps, times and directions.

I have been invited to appear on the Fox News Network with Bill O'Reilly to discuss the protest action tomorrow night. Check your local listings.

Let's show St. Mary's that we do not support radical activist bombers - no matter which decade in which they operate.

Note the bolded area.

Melanie Morgan will be on O'Reilly's show tomorrow nite on The Fox News Network.

For those of you in the Nothern California Area it will probably air at 5PM and repeated at 8.

Ask Ayers how many police his wife and movement slut Bernadine Dohrn, killed while in the Weather Underground.

That should get a reaction.

Or, ask him who funded his wife’s many trips to communist countries (Cuba, No. Vietnam, Soviet Union, etc) during her illustrious career as a traitor.
