Alamo sees return of David Crockett

David Crockett re-enlisted at the Alamo Wednesday afternoon.

But despite having a famous name, he seemed a bit overwhelmed by the pomp and color of his re-enlistment ceremony in front of the Alamo Shrine, not to mention the visitors asking him to sign his autograph or pose for a quick photo.

“I really didn’t expect all this,” said Crockett, whose full name is Staff Sgt. David O’Neal Crockett.

After 14 years in the Army, Crockett, surrounded by about a 70 spectators, including a dozen soldiers, took his re-enlistment oath. He said he plans to serve about eight more years in the Army.

Crockett, 40, suffered a mild stroke while serving in Kuwait on Dec. 17, and is recovering at Fort Sam Houston.

Although he’s worked a variety of assignments in the Army, including cook, postal work, infantry and artillery, he most recently was in mortuary affairs, administering paperwork to ensure that families of fallen troops received their benefits.

The native Texan, born in Sealy and reared in the Houston suburb of Brookshire, said he felt humbled to get the attention of tourists and the media.

“I do this because I’m an American,” he said. “I don’t want people to think I’m a hero.”

He said he felt a lot of pride having the same name as the Alamo’s most famous defender in the 1836 battle for Texas independence. But he said there also was a downside to having that name growing up.

“You avoided fights by running away,” Crockett said. “You get tired of people calling you Davy when your name is David.”

“Deep within my heart lies a melody, a song of old San Antone
Where in dreams I lived with a melody, beneath the stars all alone
It was there I found, beside the Alamo enchantment as strange as the moon up above
A moonlite path, that only 2 would know, so here’s my broken song of love”.....

Does he look like John Wayne, Fess Parker, Brian Keith or Billy Bob Thorton?

It’s about time the real truth was told about the Alamo...not every Texan defender dies in battle. Texans, including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, were captured alive by the Mexicans...and then brutally slaughtered. It’s funny how in Texas, the history books gloss over that fact (not to mention that Sam Houston was a total drunk. He was passed out during the Battle of San Jacinto. When the Texans brought in a Mexican prisoner for questioning, Houston suddenly woke up and thought they were being overrun).

After all the illegal immigration I’m starting to think they should change the motto for the Alamo from “Remember the Alamo” to Surrender the Alamo! (sarcasm)

The Diary that gave that information has been identified as a forgery. Several Mexican soldiers that were there at the Alamo stated that they buried Crockett and others there at the Alamo.
