Los Angeles Times to cut 300 jobs, shrink number of sections (Dinasaur Media Death Watch)
Chicago Tribune ^ | Jan 31, 09

Posted on 01/31/2009 9:33:54 PM PST by Rennes Templar

Chicago-based Tribune Co.'s Los Angeles Times said it is cutting 300 positions and will shrink the daily sections to four from five.

The paper's publisher, Eddy Hartenstein, informed staff in a memo Friday, explaining the cuts "are designed to help us deal with the economic realities of the day."

The expected savings from the move were not announced.

Editor Russ Stanton said in a separate memo that the cuts will include a 70-position reduction across the editorial department, or 11 percent, in the coming weeks.

They need to get out of the news business and stick with the want ads. Kind of like a big city “Thrifty Nickel.” Reporting the news is not one of the NYTs strengths.

Just the bad news though when it comes to the NYT.

A true statement. But the article is about the L.A. Times. Still, your statement is true for the L.A. Times as well. And now, just to keep in practice...

Die, L.A. Times, die die die!!

Before I die, I’d like to see the Los Angeles Times have to close it’s doors. It has stood for destruction of the things I hold dear about this nation, for as long as I can remember.

I hope it’s staff rots in hell.

This is what you get when the following is happening:

1. People are turned off by your "in the bank" bias for the Left.
2. People want to get the news NOW and will get it from 24-hour news channels and the public Internet.
3. Who wants to pay confiscatory prices for newspaper classified ads when you can do them for a lot cheaper or free on Craigslist?

Small wonder why newspapers will become the first victims of the de-massification of the media Alvin Toffer predicted 30 years ago in The Third Wave.

The Times just raised their street price to 75-cents a copy a couple of weeks ago.

This latest action will put the final nail in their coffin...

I'm not spiteful.

Really, I'm not.

So when mendacious, cynical "news" agents of the far left lose their jobs because nobody wants to pay to read over and over and over why we needed to elect Marxist Obama and defeat Prop 8 (gay "marriage") and to support illegal aliens; and never get to read just what a fine way of life and customs we have in this great country, and never read about the true and ongoing heroism by those currently in uniform...

...I won't crow too loudly.

However...I won't feel a bit sorry for them, either.

These "news" people freely chose to abandon their journalistic responsibilities, and worked daily to deceive their readers.

Adios

.

What is the stimulus bill for is not to safe guard these 70 jobs. Heck, give them a billion or two and call it even for the great work they do for the U.S.

Pretty sure that rag is a huge supporter of smoker bans. I’d be amazed if they weren’t, considering about 99% of the media is. Just one more reason to hate ‘em.
