Can the RNC’s New Man of Steele Revive the Party?
Pajamas Media ^ | February 1 | Jennifer Rubin

Steele has his work cut out for him. There are seven steps he might take to set the party on the road to recovery.

First, Steele should offer to debate DNC Chairman Tim Kaine coast-to-coast on the Democrats’ stimulus plan and the economic crisis. This is the number one issue on voters’ minds, and for once the Republicans are making headway. The public is souring on the House Democrats’ spend-a-thon disguised as a stimulus bill. And Republicans have an attractive message: cut the pork, reduce taxes, and, if we must spend gobs of money, do it on worthwhile infrastructure and needed national defense projects. Steele is a capable and likeable figure who could communicate this message well. And a debate offer would signify that the Republicans aren’t afraid to take on the administration when it is wrong. (It would also give Steele a high visibility platform to re-establish the GOP’s populist credentials, by among other things, taking on the Obama administration’s not very New Politics — including the White House’s proclivity to hire ex-lobbyists and tax cheats.)

Second, Steele should call in Mitt Romney or another respected business figure like Fed Ex’s Fred Smith to conduct a top-to-bottom audit of the RNC and recommend needed reforms...

But, will the Republicans do it? Is he a man of Steele? Hope so! :)

Independents aren’t coming back until they forget W.

Trust me, that’s how it is out here in the real world.

The more appropriate question is can one person reverse the socialist course by convincing Republican leaders, who have taken and continue to take the party over the past several years, to suddenly become conservatives?

So long as he stays with Conservative Republicans principals, we are behind him.

He needs to stay away for Newt's moderate ideas, they are not winners.

Independents gave us McCain as a candidate. We tried their way, now it's time to try something new.

Independents supported Reagan, like myself, and Paul/Hunter in this election.

As big-R Republicans continue to scorn and mock us, the Republican Party will continue to lose elections.

They lost EVERY election in my once-red district, including every local save the sheriff’s office. I can’t speak for them all, but the I’s I know scorned McC/Palin and sat out the election. Rather than making fun, the Party needs to convince us to come back.

I don't think the RNC has a clue as to what the base wants, in fact I don't believe that it wants the base at all.

Steele will be able to say and criticize freely because he is African American and can't be accused of being racist or biggoted because he dares to question the policies of the first African American president as the scheming, caniving criminal demorats would have liked to have done. Possible checkmate here, hope we see some good things from Steele, he seems to be a good conservative.

This “base” has gone home to Conservatism, wherever that may lead me.

$uce$$ will abe measured in MONEY. If Mike gets it “right” (as in not “left”) the money will start to flow into the RNC from conservatives like me. Stay in the middle, then they will have to depend on “moderates” and “independents” for the money ... good luck. I’m not spending the money with the RNC until I see a sharp right turn. Tossing Susan Collins or Lindsey Graham out of the Republican Party might be a nice start (they aren’t votes we can count on anyway).

The FIRST step Steele should do is a FOIA request of every person who signed up for change.gov

The No 1 issue is jobs. How to create the most jobs in reality not on paper is the only topic to be debated.

I’m not hopeful.

He’s too moderate and I and the media and that mushy middle that jumped on Obama’s plantation wagon could give a shite that he’s black.’’’only goblet tinkling GOP club members care about that crap.

He’s just like Obama. He got there by his skin color.

Lt Governor one term from la la land Maryland and a failed senate bid and yet he’s now a Godhead to mindless PC freepers.

Sad. Boy...damned sad.

Last conservative to the back of the bus.

Steele beat out two very solid good folks.....Blackwell and Dawson.

One of whom shazaaamm...PC freepers was black too, and the other a lady.

Just think of the identity politics possibilities to sate?

“Independents gave us McCain as a candidate. We tried their way, now it’s time to try something new.”

McCain won 19 out of 22 closed GOP primaries. Therefore Republicans nominated McCain.

Conservatives need GOP voters, and independent voters. Conservatives do NOT hold office outside the GOP.

Independents helped elect Reagan and GW Bush. The GOP needs all the votes it can get.
