Wounded Iraq vet home burns no insurance

Help is sought for a young Laclede County family, whose home was destroyed by fire Wednesday night in the 32000 area of Normal Road at Eldridge.

Crystal (Bilyeu) Lake, 22, and her husband, Brian, 23, were in Columbia on Wednesday for a medical appointment for Brian, who served in the Army in Iraq for 15 months, ending his term in 2004.

When they returned home, there was smoke coming from the home. They tried to rescue their dog, but he would not come to them, Crystal Lake said.

“It was such a loss. My husband lost his medals, his Purple Heart, things that cannot be replaced,” she said.

Brian Lake received the medal after he was injured by a piece of metal shrapnel that struck the left side of his leg and back, leaving him with spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. The wound occurred in Iraq in 2003.

The house was a total loss. The family, consisting of Crystal, who attended Lebanon High School, Brian, a graduate of Stoutland High School, and four children, lost all their belongings, except the few that the children had taken to a relative’s home when the parents traveled to Columbia. The Lakes bought the home, their first home, last summer and had recently finished remodeling it.

Contributions of clothing donations will be accepted at Crosslines in the name of the Brian Lake Family. A Central Bank account will be set up today in the name of the Lake Family.

Insurance had lapsed a few days before the fire. Were also in the process of adopting.

I think they’re sorry they didn’t renew it in time.

You planning on sending them money or did you just come here to stir up trouble?

You’re the first one who brought it up so why the “you see?.
It’s a given that mortgage companies require homeowners to carry home insurance. The other guy was stating the obvious.

Really makes you question the motives of some folks, doesn't it? This injured veteran has been referred to in some pretty ugly language on this thread ... all by the jerk who is trying to put words into other peoples' posts. Do you think he realizes how much damage he's doing to the cause and is it on purpose?

Anyone with clothes that can be donated ... there are sizes given in the article if you will follow the link and a telephone number that, I assume, will get you an address for shipment. I have some nice clothes that will fit and I'll make the call tomorrow.
