Ankara - More than 40 per cent of women in Turkey have been physically or sexually abused by their husbands, according to a survey released Thursday by the Prime Minister's Office.
Only a fraction of victims 'slapped, pushed, punched, choked, burnt or threatened or attacked with a weapon such as a knife or gun' ever report the abuse to authorities, the Department for the Status of Women said in a press release accompanying the survey.
The survey showed a clear income divide with just under 50 per cent of women in low income households reporting to have been physically or sexually abused by their husbands, compared to 28.7 per cent of those in the higher income bracket.
Regionally, women in central and eastern Turkey were also much more likely to suffer from abuse, with more than 50 per cent in south-eastern Turkey reporting abuse compared to less than 27 per cent in north-western Turkey.
In total 12,795 women across the country took part in the survey in August and October 2008.
Sounds like if the women of Turkey get some strength, there will be fewer Turks. That is not a bad thing, IMHO.
Oh... but if the world was as poly-annish as the politicians in Washington. Unfortunately we are screwed because our leaders are weak. Hopefully we will make it through this AGE OF PACIFISM... it is a rotten era of tolerance... or not caring. It will pass, as all eras do.... but it is disgraceful. Hopefully, the baby-boomers will retire so honor can be restored.
Maybe fix some problems... like a cat and pinking shears.

I’d say the only surprise is that Erdogan’s office would release this report, given that he and his rancid AKP are a lot of Islamist sh#tbags. Is this just for external consumption, to fulfill some EU mandate? I think more than a little skepticism is warranted as to motivation.
” more than a little skepticism is warranted”
Agreed. My brother lived in Turkey for 3 years and from what I heard from him, it seems unlikely they would release this kind of statistic unless it served some purpose. I suspect your comment about the EU is probably not far off the mark.

Who’s abusing the rest of them?

Thanks - I found this site recuperating after an accident. It helped to keep me from going crazy while I went through 4 surgeries and a skin graft. I decided to wait to join until after I was off the morphine and other pain-killers so I could post a coherent reply. I hope I am successful, Mrs. Jubal and the Jubalettes say they have been waiting for years to get an intelligent, coherent response. I ask you this: With a wife, 3 daughters, a mother, a mother-in-law and an ex-wife, does anyone really expect me to be able to give a intelligent response? -—JM
Just another Tom turkey in the hen house.
Ah, good to see things are getting so much better than they were in the old days.
Well, if they’d just stop pissing off their husbands....
