The deYoung heirs were the smartest people in the world. They sold The Chronicle to Hearst for $660 million and KRON-TV for $823 million to a company that ended up filing for bankruptcy... that’s a whopping $1.5 billion for media assets that have fared very badly.

Hearst makes decisions that are hard to understand. They closed Victoria magazine at a time when it had close to a million devoted subscribers. (It has since been reopened, hooray!). Meanwhile Ms magazine goes chugging along with less than 200K readers. Wha???
