Senate votes to give DC citizens vote in Congress

District of Columbia when it became the nation's capital two centuries ago would be granted under legislation the Senate passed Thursday.

Congress is "moving to right a centuries-old wrong," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid shortly before the 61-37 vote.

The House is expected to pass the measure with a strong majority next week and President Barack Obama, a co-sponsor when the bill failed to clear the Senate two years ago, has promised to sign it.

The measure is likely to face a court challenge immediately after becoming law; opponents argue that it is unconstitutional because D.C. is not a state and does not qualify for representation.

Sam, you are right. Just like in the 70s. 1870s, that is.

"Six Republican senators, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both of Maine, Orrin Hatch of Utah, Richard Lugar of Indiana, Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and George Voinovich of Ohio, voted for the measure today".

Think conservative NOT Republican.

Smart. Those black robes live too near the cesspool to be trusted.

Constitutionally invalid on its face.

Feel free to pass an Amendment. If you can.

Why not give them two senate seats too?
This is a nightmare.

Oh, great. D.C. is overwhelmingly the home of criminals, drug addicts, gang members, and societal underachievers. I wonder who they'll vote for?

The Constitution is now considered, by the current administration and idiots in Congress, a mere suggestion - not a strict rule of law.

Not 51, what about Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Samoa and Guam. Let’s make it a nice 55. With the expansion of government, might as well.

Tipping point. It is over.

Once the SCOTUS goes, which it almost has, the Constitution might as well be burned. They studied the Communist Manifesto well.

With ACORN around, there may not be any difference in the Presidential election count. :-\

DC should become part of Maryland. Although both MD and VA gave land to create DC, VA’s land was ceded back to that state in the 1800’s. So DC now only sits on land that used to belong to MD. MD is a Dem state anyway; just have DC voters vote for MD’s senators/reps.

Ready to fight yet, Americans? Not enough proof of a takeover over the last month?

Some won't believe it unless Thomas, Scalia, Roberts and Alito keel over all within a single month. Which I wouldn't put it past the Regime to effect.

“Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, who sponsored the bill with Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, expressed confidence that they could win the legal argument and noted that the bill contained an expedited appeals process to ensure a quick court decision.”

The bill does not just have Republican votes, it has a Republican sponsor.

Is there any doubt we are under Communists rule now? Our Constitution has been trashed years ago and is being finished off with King Obama and the RAT party. Civil war is coming.

Maybe they will find a couple more.

Hatch has lost his mind.

Isn't he past the recommended retirement age?

Good GAWD all mighty, we ALL as a whole need to retire so we don't become a hindrance upon society while "lawmakers" are stretchered into the chambers for a vote and others slumber via aged need during pertinent government lawmaking.
