Domestic partnership bill rejected by Senate (NM - its dead Jim)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | February 26, 2009; 4:49 p.m. | Dan Boyd

The New Mexico Senate just voted down a bill that would have recognized domestic partnerships by a 25-17 vote.

Ten Democrats joined the body’s 15 Republicans in voting against the bill, which would have given many of the same benefits enjoyed by married couples to couples who don’t currently have the right, or the desire, to marry.

Third year in a row that the bill failed to pass. With that large a margin, its unlikely to be resurrected as the session ends in just over two weeks.

Richardson, of course, was a strong supporter.

One small victory.

PING! to the NM list.

My guess is it is not very popular with Hispanic Catholics or the Church in NM or some of the Mormons and other Christians in NM. There are quite a few Mormons in NM.

I’m surprised at how large the margin was. King Bill was lobbying heavily for this.

Here is a link to the Santa Fe New Mexican’s comment page. Santa Fe has a very large gay population, proportionally maybe as large as San Francisco. If you go to the link you can see the tenor of the comments.

They’ll be back.

They’ll keep coming back.

The dialectic, you know.

I heard richardson is pretty much toast and is on the road to becoming a mini-Blago. He double-crossed the Clintons on Fat Boy jumping on O’s bandwagon. Bill and Hillary then shanked him by probably passing to a reporter records of his dirty deals.

I would be suprised if Bill is not pushing as hard as it appears.

Santa Fe has a lot of gays but in the rest of the state the politicians have Catholic Mexican Americans (not illegals but long-time residents), Mormons, other Christians plus retired military. The margin is huge.

NM beat this one back, but the persistent anti-death penalty crowd may be successful this year. Only thing stopping them right now is Bill Richardson.

Yep.

But here’s a question... with all the “Hispanic Catholics” why don’t we have some anti-infanticide bills/laws going? Or did I miss the part where the Pope said that Abortion’s S-Ok?

You may be right, but it's largely symbolic as there are appeals after appeals and no one has been put to death in years. It's nice to have that option, but with the libs and lib judges here, actually strapping someone in is unlikely.

On the other hand, the same-day voter registration bill is the one that needs to be deep sixed. No checking for background or illegal status, no photo-ID required; just sign up and say you're eligible to vote (bring in a utility bill with your address as proof) and they give you a ballot.

I wish he’d hurry up and go away, it can’t be soon enough. One thing I’m thinking is that in the hard times some of these crooked politicians are going to be goners because there isn’t going to be enough money to steal and they’ll start ratting on each other.

Great for NM. Now they need to get to work on a state Constitutional Amendment.
