Chinese E-Cigs Gain Ground Amid Concerns

BEIJING -- It looks like a regular cigarette. It even gives off curlicues of white smoke like a regular cigarette.

But it's electronic.

The smokeless smoke is being marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking and a potential way to kick the habit.

The battery-powered device produces a nicotine-infused mist that's absorbed directly into the lungs. Because no burning is involved, makers say there's no hazardous cocktail of cancer-causing chemicals and gases and no secondhand smoke.

But health authorities are skeptical.

The World Health Organization has said there's no evidence to back up contentions that e-cigarettes are a safe substitute for smoking or a way to help smokers quit.

It doesn’t sound much different than the nicotine inhalers that have been available here for some time. You can get them by prescription. I used them to quit smoking almost 4 years ago. I wore two nicotine patches at a time and used the inhaler and it helped me kick a 3 pack a day addiction. Then I went to treatment for the nicotine addiction and have been off nicotine for 3 1/2 years.

I’m glad they worked for you, a couple of people have tried them here at work and failed within a few weeks each.

You guys miss the point. These units are a real test to see if the claims of the anti-smoking crowd about second hand smoke are real, or, instead they are a “smokescreen” for their real goal, which is control over people’s lives.

Given that these cigs apparently don’t emit smoke or any other odor, then they should just be fine in public or at work...or will they???

I’d love to go into a restaurant and pull out one of these. Or go grocery shopping with one of these sticking out of my mouth.

I think the real reason is to raise the price of LEDs and to cause a shortage for other industries that use them. ;)

In 1988, RJR introduced a high-tech cigarette called Premier that was very similar to this product. It was made of aluminum capsules that contained tobacco pellets. The pellets were heated instead of burned, thereby producing less smoke and ash than traditional cigarettes. The Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, said that it was a "drug-delivery system" and placed it under regulation of the FDA.

I would presume that any new device like this would also come under their regulation and thus will never be sold here.
