TOWSON, Md. – A jury is awarding about $150 million to nearly 300 people who sued Exxon Mobil over wells contaminated by a gasoline leak north of Baltimore.

The Baltimore County jury awarded a majority of the families in the lawsuit about $1 million each for emotional distress Thursday. Other damages cover declining home values and lifetime medical monitoring.

The jury didn't find Irving, Texas-based Exxon Mobil committed fraud, and therefore couldn't impose punitive damages. The plaintiffs had sought several billion in damages.

About 26,000 gallons of gasoline leaked from a gas station in 2006 in the town of Jacksonville.

I wonder what the original offer was to settle out of court. Since they were asking for billions and got 150 million I bet after the lawyers got through they would have been better off just settling.

Oh well, I believe no punitive damages means they have to pay tax on this too. Welcome to the club of "The top 1% of earners" people.

Did Exxon Mobil own the gas station or did they just provide the gas?

Don’t know, but 26k gallons is a lot to lose. Either it was a catastrophic break or a very slow one, in/out meters would have caught anything in between I think.

That is only $500,000 before lawyer fees and Uncle Obama. They were looking for a way to retire and instead have a small nest egg.

Good question.

Around here, central VA, a guy got put out of business because Exxon installed tanks leaked and the EPA held HIM liable.

I guess that they proved that s*** happens sometimes and it wasn’t covered up or mishandled in any way. They found out about it, did what was needed to correct the problem and offered compensation to the affected people.

Sometimes juries see the greed for what it is.

I thought that the capital letters practice was mainly to do with the Postal Service.
